Ways To Prevent Hemorrhoids
Though its not always possible to stop hemorrhoids from happening, you may be able to reduce your risk by doing some of the following:
- Consume a diet thats filled with plenty of fiber and liquids to ensure your stool is healthy and help prevent constipation3
- Limit the time you spend on the toilet, as this is a common cause of hemorrhoids3
- Talk with a healthcare provider about ways to manage constipation or further medical help if straining becomes an issue3
While hemorrhoids may be difficult to talk about and uncomfortable to experience, it can be helpful to have a better understanding of their causes and symptoms to prepare you in case you get them.
What Do External Hemorrhoids Look Like
Hemorrhoids, often referred to as piles, get their name from the Greek word haimorrhoides. If you do hear someone talking about piles, just know that piles and hemorrhoids refer to the same thing.
This means veins that are liable to discharge blood. Do external hemorrhoids go away? Yes, in most cases, theyll go away in a few days and wont require any medical treatment.
External hemorrhoids, unlike internal ones, are noticeable to the human eye. They are located underneath the skin that surrounds the anus.
When external hemorrhoids swell, they can be visible. When an external hemorrhoid becomes swollen, it will prolapse to the outside of the anus and can then be seen or felt.
External hemorrhoids appear as clumps of dilated blood vessels outside the opening of the anus.
When hemorrhoids swell, the veins enlarge, and their walls become stretched, causing the swollen bulges we see in external hemorrhoids.
External hemorrhoids appear in bunches as soft lumps. They are generally soft or squishy to touch and can range in size. Witch hazel is often used for external hemorrhoids.
External hemorrhoids can be as small as a pea and as large as a grape. There is a mucus covering on hemorrhoids that can become damaged during bowel movements.
This is when bleeding external hemorrhoids occur.
External hemorrhoids that become thrombosed may appear different as explained in the next section.
You may experience serious hemorrhoid pain with a thrombosis.
Anal Itching At Night
Itching at night can interfere with a good night’s sleep. Scratching during sleep can pose a problem when you aren’t aware you are doing it. To minimize damage from unintentional scratching, keep your nails trimmed and consider wearing a pair of light, soft, cotton gloves. For some, antihistamines may help. Ask your healthcare provider if this is an option for you.

Signs Of Anal Skin Tags
Skin tags are not hemorrhoids, but they can be left behind after an external hemorrhoid has healed. Skin tags appear after the skin is stretched, such as by an external hemorrhoid. Once the hemorrhoid has resolved itself, the skin may remain stretched, resulting in a skin tag.
Skin tags are benign, but it is advisable to get any lump checked by a doctor to get confirmation of that.
Skin tags have the following characteristics:
- Small bumps or raised areas
- Soft
- Scaly.

Signs Of Thrombosed Hemorrhoids
A thrombosed hemorrhoid is a hemorrhoid that has developed a blood clot inside. This can happen to both external and internal hemorrhoids. Signs and symptoms of a thrombosed hemorrhoid include:]

How Are Hemorrhoids Diagnosed
A visual examination of your anus may be enough to diagnose hemorrhoids. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may do a different examination to check for any abnormalities within the anus.
This check is known as a digital rectal exam. During this exam, your doctor inserts a gloved and lubricated finger into your rectum.
Depending on your risk factors for gastrointestinal disease, your doctor may order an additional test like an anoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy.
Each of these tests involves your doctor using a small camera to diagnose any abnormalities in your anus, rectum, or colon.
An anoscopy examines the inside of your anus, a sigmoidoscopy examines the last 2 feet of your colon, and a colonoscopy explores the entire colon.
In these tests, a small fiber-optic camera fits into a small tube thats inserted into your rectum. With this test, your doctor gets a clear view of the inside of your rectum so that they can examine the hemorrhoid up close.

You can have hemorrhoids treated at home or at a doctors office.
When To Call Your Doctor
Even if you think its from hemorrhoids, you should call your doctor about any rectal bleeding. Its also a symptom of colon polyps, colitis, Crohns disease, diverticulitis, and colorectal cancer. Anal fissures can also cause pain and bleeding. So youll want to make sure you get the right diagnosis and treatment.
If your hemorrhoids are very painful or arent getting better after youve tried treating them yourself, let your doctor know.

What Do Hemorrhoids Look Like When They Fall Out
Internal hemorrhoids can get to the stage where they become prolapsed. Prolapsed hemorrhoids are internal hemorrhoids that become so big that they bulge outside of the opening of the anus.
So, if your hemorrhoid has fallen out, you have an internal prolapsed hemorrhoid.
When you have a prolapsed hemorrhoid, you will notice a moist bump that is pinker than the surrounding area. What does a prolapse look like? This is a picture of a prolapsed hemorrhoid.
Prolapsed hemorrhoids usually go back on their own, but some can be gently pushed back into place.
Internal hemorrhoids are generally divided into one of four stages. The more serious the stage of the internal hemorrhoid is, the more likely it is to be seen. Stage one internal hemorrhoids are not seen externally.
Although they cause some hemorrhoid bleeding, they will not push out of the opening of the anus. Internal hemorrhoids at stage 2 begin to prolapse.
Although they might be seen on the outside of the opening of the anus, they generally retract back into the rectal cavity on their own.
Stage 3 internal hemorrhoids have prolapsed externally and often require at-home or physician treatment.
The most serious internal hemorrhoids, stage 4, protrude out of the opening of the anus and are likely to become thrombosed.
Prolapses can often be the result of the combination of hemorrhoids and pregnancy, when there is a big increase in the pressure surrounding the veins in the anal canal.

Can Hemorrhoids Be Prevented
Hemorrhoids can’t always be avoided, but the steps to help prevent hemorrhoids are similar to the ones I recommend for coping with them:
- Sit on the toilet if you have the urge to go, but not longer. Try not to spend more than 10 or 15 minutes having a bowel movement and avoid straining or forcing. If you’re having trouble going, it’s better to get up and try again later than to simply keep sitting there.
- Limit distractions. It’s fine to read or look at your phone while you’re sitting on the toilet for a few minutes. Just set a timer so you don’t end up staying there for too long.
- Eat more fiber. If you’re regularly having trouble going, adding more high-fiber foods to your diet can help. So can limiting your intake of low-fiber foods like cheese, meat, ice cream, fast food, and highly processed snacks.
- Avoid heavy lifting when possible. Straining to lift can put excess pressure on the rectal and anal veins.
What Do Hemorrhoids Feel Like To Touch
Hemorrhoids usually feel wet to touch. This is because the veins are broken and damaged. Dont touch your hemorrhoids with your bare hands.
The last thing you want to do is touch your hemorrhoids and pass germs on to them.
If a hemorrhoid gets infected, that can be a problem. If you have to touch your hemorrhoids make sure your hands are clean.

What Common Habit Can Lead To Hemorrhoids
Many of my patients are surprised to learn that sitting on the toilet for long periods can also lead to hemorrhoids. The shape of the toilet seat puts extra pressure on the rectum and anus. This can cause the veins to become swollen when you sit there for a long time. Then when youre pushing hard during a bowel movement, you’ve got the potential for hemorrhoids.
Some people need more time to move their bowels than others. But when I ask my patients about their bathroom habits, I often hear about one that is contributing to their hemorrhoids: smartphone usage. Yes, many of us are spending too much time scrolling the web while sitting on the toilet.

What causes hemorrhoids?Any increase in abdominal pressure may produce hemorrhoids however, some people can get hemorrhoids for no apparent reason. Typically, the problem is associated with chronic constipation or diarrhea, accompanied by straining during bowel movements and prolonged sitting on the toiletall of which interfere with blood flow to and from the rectum and the anus. Under these circumstances, blood starts to pool and enlarge the vessels of the hemorrhoidal plexus. We discuss symptoms and treatments for constipation in depth later in this report.
There are some factors associated with the development of hemorrhoids you cannot control, while others you can.
SymptomsSome people with hemorrhoids never have any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, you may experience one or several of them, and their severity may vary. The most common symptoms include the following:
Severe pain is not a typical symptom, except in the case of a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.

Other Causes For Rectal Pain
Dr. Miller: Any other causes of rectal pain? I know that there’s one that is a spasm that occurs from time to time in some people.
Dr. Pickron: Some people get this kind of vague rectal pain, which as you mentioned is just kind of a spasm, it’s fairly poorly understood. There are some options for it such as physical therapy, biofeedback, but these can be challenging things to treat.
Dr. Miller: It comes on suddenly and then goes away over seconds to minutes, I think, sometimes.
Dr. Pickron: Yeah, usually happens in the middle of the night. People kind of wake up and they feel this intense pressure almost like a Charley horse in their rectum, which not a pleasant sensation.
Dr. Miller: Any other causes of pain?
Dr. Pickron: Those are primarily the big ones, infections, abscesses are fairly common and those are typically treated with surgical drainage.
Blood Clots In The Hemorrhoid
External hemorrhoids can be very painful if they become thrombosed. Thrombosed hemorrhoids usually appear purple-blue on light skin and grey, black, or dark brown on dark skin.
A thrombosed hemorrhoid occurs when the veins that cause the bulge in the hemorrhoid develop a blood clot. As a result, blood cannot flow to the hemorrhoid, and the effect can be excruciating.
The body will often absorb the blood clot in time, reducing the symptoms and easing the pain.
When the blood clot passes or the body reabsorbs it, an external hemorrhoid may sometimes leave behind a
- ascites, which is a buildup of fluid that places extra pressure on the stomach and intestines
Hemorrhoids are one of the most common medical conditions, and the likelihood of developing them increases with age. The reason for this is that the tissues lining the anus and sphincter become thinner and less able to withstand pressure from pushing and straining.
External hemorrhoids are different than other hemorrhoid types, mostly due to their location. Internal hemorrhoids, for example, are inside the rectum. They are usually painless but may bleed.
Prolapsed hemorrhoids are internal hemorrhoids that sometimes bulge outside of the anus. It is possible to push these hemorrhoids back inside, but they may go back in without intervention.
External hemorrhoids protrude from the anus. They tend to cause more pain than internal hemorrhoids because the outside of the anus is more sensitive than the inside.

What Does A Small Hemorrhoid Look Like
Many small hemorrhoids go undetected. Internal hemorrhoids that are small are not visible. They may bleed during bowel movements, this being the only indication that you have hemorrhoids.
External hemorrhoids that are small may still go undetected. They form as pillow-like, soft lumps around the opening of the anus. Usually, internal hemorrhoids that have not prolapsed exhibit little to no hemorrhoid pain.
It is common for a thrombosed hemorrhoid to burst and bleed. The clot will usually only bleed for about 10 seconds.
They often go away on their own without treatment. It is not until an external hemorrhoid becomes increasingly prolapsed that they can be easily felt or seen. Small hemorrhoids have been compared to the size of a pea.

Noticing blood in your stool for the first time is understandably alarming. The good news is that its likely that blood in your stool is an indication of hemorrhoids, which while not much fun, arent generally a serious medical condition.
Hemorrhoids are actually swollen veins located in the anus and rectum area, and theyre quite common: Approximately half of all adults experience hemorrhoids by the age of 50. How Long Do Hemorrhoids Last If Untreated
Hemorrhoids are normal tissue and only raise concern when they swell, become inflamed, or bleed. Hemorrhoids will recur after nonsurgical treatment about 50% of the time, while the recurrence rate after surgery is only 5%. The goal is to control hemorrhoid inflammation by diet and hydration so that surgery is not required. In this respect, hemorrhoids are a life-long condition, to be controlled and not cured.
Hemorrhoids are blood vessels located in the smooth muscles of the walls of the rectum and anus. They are a normal part of the anatomy and are located at the junction where small arteries merge into veins. They are cushioned by smooth muscles and connective tissue and are classified by where they are located in relationship to the pectinate line, the dividing point between the upper 2/3 and lower 1/3 of the anus. This is an important anatomic distinction because of the type of cells that line hemorrhoids, and the nerves that provide sensation.
- Internal hemorrhoids are located above the pectinate line and are covered with cells that are the same as those that line the rest of the intestines.
- External hemorrhoids arise below the line and are covered with cells that resemble skin.
- Hemorrhoids become an issue only when they begin to swell, causing itching, pain, and/or bleeding.
