For most people, the signs and symptoms of hemorrhoidsitchiness, swelling, discomfortwill be mild and respond to home remedies. In a minority of cases, however, hemorrhoid signs and symptoms will be severe enough that they require treatment from a physician. Rarely, hemorrhoids that cause significant blood loss or a blood clot can be life-threatening. Itâs important to note that one of the chief calling cards of hemorrhoids, blood in or on the stool or on toilet paper, should never be considered normal. While the cause could indeed be hemorrhoids, a more serious condition could be afoot.
Hemorrhoids can come with external and/or internal symptoms, depending on how they form.
External Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids on the outside of the anus are known as external hemorrhoids. When To Go To The Hospital
Most of the time hemorrhoids can be managed by your primary care physician. A few situations exist that may require that instead you to go to the hospital emergency department.
If you have considerable pain, bleeding, or a prolapsed hemorrhoid and are unable to get in touch with your doctor, then you should be evaluated in the emergency department.

When To Call The Doctor
If you notice recurrent bleeding between bowel movements or have a moderate amount of bleeding, you should consult with your doctor.
If you have a family history of colon cancer or are over age 40 you should see your doctor for evaluation of the recurrent rectal bleeding.
If you have prolapsed hemorrhoids that will not go back into the anus, or you have significant anal or rectal pain, you should consult your doctor.
There are numerous other medical causes of rectal bleeding that are much more serious than hemorrhoids. These will require a doctor to further evaluate he cause so that serious conditions such as colon cancer and colitis are not overlooked

Hemorrhoids turn out to be cancer
A 49-YEAR-OLD WOMAN, whose husband was on active duty with the US Army, went to an army community hospital in March complaining of hemorrhoids, back pain, and itching, burning, and pain with bowel movements. A guaiac-based fecal occult blood test was positive no further testing was done to rule out rectal cancer.
The woman was discharged with pain medication but returned the following day, reporting intense anal pain despite taking the medication and bright red blood in her stools. The symptoms were attributed to hemorrhoids, and the patient was given a toilet donut and topical medication. Although her records noted a referral to a general surgeon, the referral wasnt arranged or scheduled.
Less than a week after the surgery consult, the patients husband was transferred to another military base. Her doctors said that a surgeon at the new base would be told about her medical condition, but that didnt happen.

What Are The Types Of Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids can happen inside or outside the rectum. The type depends on where the swollen vein develops. Types include:
- External: Swollen veins form underneath the skin around the anus. Your anus is the canal where poop comes out. External hemorrhoids can be itchy and painful. Occasionally, they bleed. Sometimes they fill with blood that can clot. This is not dangerous, but can result in pain and swelling.
- Internal: Swollen veins form inside the rectum. Your rectum is the part of the digestive system that connects the colon to the anus. Internal hemorrhoids may bleed, but they usually arent painful.
- Prolapsed: Both internal and external hemorrhoids can prolapse, meaning they stretch and bulge outside of the anus. These hemorrhoids may bleed or cause pain.

Do Hemorrhoids Cause Back Pain
From a scientific perspective, the link between hemorrhoids and back pain is dubious. Some have speculated that hemorrhoids require so much blood that they drain blood from other sources. Such instances they claim may cause back pain in muscular regions of the back due to a lack of blood flow.
