For most people, the signs and symptoms of hemorrhoidsitchiness, swelling, discomfortwill be mild and respond to home remedies. In a minority of cases, however, hemorrhoid signs and symptoms will be severe enough that they require treatment from a physician. Rarely, hemorrhoids that cause significant blood loss or a blood clot can be life-threatening. Itâs important to note that one of the chief calling cards of hemorrhoids, blood in or on the stool or on toilet paper, should never be considered normal. While the cause could indeed be hemorrhoids, a more serious condition could be afoot.

Hemorrhoids can come with external and/or internal symptoms, depending on how they form.

External Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids on the outside of the anus are known as external hemorrhoids. A hard lump might be felt in that area and can often be uncomfortable because it is irritated by bowel movements and by wiping with toilet paper. External hemorrhoids are painful because of the many nerve endings located on the skin around the anus.

If the hemorrhoid becomes inflamed and engorged with blood it may look bluish-purple and be painful, not only during a bowel movement but even when walking or sitting.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids And Tailbone Pain

When the hemorrhoidal tissues become inflamed or enlarged, and especially when they prolapse, they cause the levator muscles to pull harder. This moves the coccyx more than normal, causing tailbone pain.

Like other bones, the coccyx has pain nerve fibers. These fibers cause pain when stretched. When the levator muscles pull on the tailbone too hard, it stretches the bone ever so slightly. This can also happen because of other common health concerns, including anxiety or stress. This occurs because stress can lead to muscle spasms in the levator muscles as well as other susceptible muscles.

The tailbone pain often associated with hemorrhoids may be acute and occur suddenly without warning. In other cases, it may be chronic and long-lasting. Some of our patients report acute pain waking them up at night. Then, chronic tailbone pain follows them throughout the day. As you can imagine and may have experienced both acute and chronic pain can be major distraction or even cause you to miss work.

The good news is that this type of tailbone pain is not related to cancer or any other serious, life-threatening problems. Of course any unexplained pain, especially unremitting pain, should be evaluated by your doctor to be sure that nothing else is causing the pain.

What Is Colon Cancer What Does It Look Like

Colon cancer is the transformation of normal cells to abnormal cells in the colon. Most colon cancers are adenocarcinomas-tumors that develop from the glands lining the colon’s inner wall. Left untreated, these cancers grow and eventually spread through the colon wall to involve the adjacent lymph nodes and organs. Ultimately, they spread to distant organs such as the liver, lungs, brain, and bones.

Sometimes colon cancer, or malignant tumors, are referred to as colorectal cancer, reflecting the fact that the rectum, the end portion of the colon, also can be affected. Some researchers and doctors recognize colon and rectal cancer to be two different types of cancer in the digestive tract, due to the anatomical differences in the rectum as compared to the rest of the colon.

  • One in 17 people in the U.S. will develop colorectal cancer.
  • According to reports from the National Cancer Institute, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in U.S. men.
  • Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in U.S. women of Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, or Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry, and the third most common cancer in white and African American women.
  • Deaths from colorectal cancer rank third after lung and prostate cancer for men and third after lung and breast cancer for women.
  • Death statistics from colon cancer vs. rectal cancer is not clear as an estimated 40% of rectal cancers are misdiagnosed as colon cancer.

Hemorrhoids turn out to be cancer

A 49-YEAR-OLD WOMAN, whose husband was on active duty with the US Army, went to an army community hospital in March complaining of hemorrhoids, back pain, and itching, burning, and pain with bowel movements. A guaiac-based fecal occult blood test was positive no further testing was done to rule out rectal cancer.

The woman was discharged with pain medication but returned the following day, reporting intense anal pain despite taking the medication and bright red blood in her stools. The symptoms were attributed to hemorrhoids, and the patient was given a toilet donut and topical medication. Although her records noted a referral to a general surgeon, the referral wasnt arranged or scheduled.

Less than a week after the surgery consult, the patients husband was transferred to another military base. Her doctors said that a surgeon at the new base would be told about her medical condition, but that didnt happen.

What Are The Types Of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids can happen inside or outside the rectum. The type depends on where the swollen vein develops. Types include:

  • External: Swollen veins form underneath the skin around the anus. Your anus is the canal where poop comes out. External hemorrhoids can be itchy and painful. Occasionally, they bleed. Sometimes they fill with blood that can clot. This is not dangerous, but can result in pain and swelling.
  • Internal: Swollen veins form inside the rectum. Your rectum is the part of the digestive system that connects the colon to the anus. Internal hemorrhoids may bleed, but they usually arent painful.
  • Prolapsed: Both internal and external hemorrhoids can prolapse, meaning they stretch and bulge outside of the anus. These hemorrhoids may bleed or cause pain.

Do Hemorrhoids Cause Back Pain

6 Hemorrhoid Fixes for PAIN & BLEEDING – Complete Physiotherapy Guide to HOME REMEDY Hemorrhoids

From a scientific perspective, the link between hemorrhoids and back pain is dubious. Some have speculated that hemorrhoids require so much blood that they drain blood from other sources. Such instances they claim may cause back pain in muscular regions of the back due to a lack of blood flow.

The other possible connection between hemorrhoids and back pain is the location. People often complain of hemorrhoid pain near the tailbone because hemorrhoids grow near their tailbone. Such growths can cause sufferers to equate hemorrhoids pain with tailbone pain, thus establishing a back pain connection. Again, both connections are dubious and not scientifically founded.

Hemorrhoids, under normal circumstances, should be seen by a doctor. When hemorrhoids begin bleeding and occur outside the body, a physician should be consulted. Anal bleeding can be a symptom of more serious issues such as colon or rectal cancers.

Over-the-counter medications can be helpful in treating most hemorrhoids. The over-the-counter creams relieve pain and reduce swelling. Other treatments help external hemorrhoids without the aid of a doctor. Treatments include adding more fiber to meals, drinking more water and the hemorrhoid creams to reduce itch-inducing inflammation. These treatments have also been shown effective in treating internal hemorrhoids.
