Why Soap Shouldnt Be Your Go
Using the wrong soaps too often can cause irritation to any skin, and we recommend never using it on the sensitive skin around the anus.
- Soap products will dry out the area.
- Dry skin can lead to fissures, micro-abrasions, and hemorrhoids.
- Fragrances and additives will only increase any discomfort you may already feel.
Bar soaps that many people use in the shower often have a very high pH, much higher than your skin. Liquid soap, such as body wash or shower gel, may be somewhat better. However, most still have harsh ingredients that wash away your skins natural oils. With these oils gone, your skin gets dry and irritated.
Some of these ingredients include:
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
- Synthetic colors
- Artificial fragrances
Water cleans your skin without exposing you to these harsh ingredients and is the best option for keeping your anal area clean. Just say no to soap, but rinse regularly and pat dry.
Frequent Peeing After Birth
You thought pregnancy meant a lot of trips to the bathroom! Many postpartum moms experience a frequent need to pee, as the body starts to lose all the excess fluid that built up during pregnancy.
Some women also have trouble stopping the flow. In fact, the strain of vaginal delivery can cause mild incontinence for new moms

Vagisil is a commercial, over-the-counter topical cream that relieves vaginal itching in women. Vagisil is available as a regular-strength or maximum-strength cream. Vagisil is easy to use, but there are a few precautions to keep in mind when you use it.
Why Would A Dr Tell Me To Use Betamethasone Cream On Genitals When Other Information Says Not To
Go the Rx for Clotrimazol cream and Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream 0.05 for itching anus and vulva, but everywhere I read it says NOT to use on anal -genital area! I am scared to stop treatment as i am afraid symptoms will come back, yet skin looks all white down there now like it was bleached and I am afraid to continue use.
Added 20 Mar 2011:
I have a mysterious itch no one can diagnose it is NOT yeast or any other infection that 2 labs can detect.
It is hard to tell from your post to see if the doctor told you if you actually had a yeast infection. Clotrimazole cream treat the itch and irritation from a yeast infection. Generally speaking, you should follow your doctors advice regarding medications they prescribe for you. There is a prescription tablet for a bad yeast infection called Diflucan, or fluconazole that is oral and although it can take 24 hours to get all thru your body, it treats the yeast from the inside out. There are also over the counter creams that help with the itch, vagisil cream, would be an example. If you have continued itching after a week on clotimazole cream, it may not be a yeast infection, further testing should be done.
It is best to wear loose fitting clothing preferably cotton while you are treating this condition.
If you are still nervous, please consult the pharmacist or the doctor for further clarification.

Get Fast Relief For Symptoms By Changing Your Anal Hygiene Routine
If you are experiencing symptoms that include anal itching and irritation, the cure may be as easy as changing your routine to eliminate harsh soaps and vigorous polishing. If symptoms dont go away, it is a good idea to see a proctologist to rule out anything more serious. In Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, or other areas nearby, you can find out more about making an appointment with one of our colon and rectal surgeons at 273-2310.
Our doctors can also offer additional tips and tricks to keep your anal area clean without too much scrubbing down there. Let us help you eliminate your symptoms and prevent them from coming back.
If the diagnosis is something more serious than too vigorous cleaning, we can also put a treatment plan in place that allows you to get relief quickly while we work toward stopping your infection, getting rid of parasites, or taking care of another colorectal health concern.
Stay Away From Harsh Products And Procedures
We see it regularly in our Los Angeles colon and rectal practice. Patients pay hundreds of dollars for complicated anal hygiene procedures like bleaching or other deep cleaning methods that only put them at risk for fissures, open cuts, itching, irritation, and other symptoms. Even if you cant see or feel the effects right away, harsh products weaken and dry out the sensitive areas youre paying so much to care, coddle and beautify.
The bottles of douching solution seen in feminine hygiene aisles may also be tempting, but these products have too much fragrance to be considered safe. You should never need anything stronger than water to ensure you stay clean and comfortable.

Anal Hygiene When You Have External Hemorrhoids
External hemorrhoids are bulging lumps in the opening of the anus. In some cases, itching and feeling a lump coming from your rectum are the only symptoms you will see. A proctologist can diagnose an external hemorrhoid by taking your history, discussing your symptoms, and doing a visual examination.
This clump of tissue can be painless, but it can make it difficult to perform good anal hygiene. Before and after you see your doctor, you will need to ensure the area remains clean to ensure quick healing and reduce the risk of infection. Some tips for maintaining good anal hygiene with external hemorrhoids include:
- Using regular sitz baths for hemorrhoids to relieve pain and swelling
- Showering instead of wiping after a bowel movement
- Avoiding rubbing or scrubbing by using a hair dryer or patting the area dry
- Applying medications or creams only when prescribed by your doctor

Can A Vaginal Cream Really Make Your Hair Grow
An interesting Internet meme has recently emerged: women using vaginal yeast infection products to grow their hair longer or to reverse hair loss.
A quick search of YouTube will net you hundreds of testimonial videos from women who’ve used this to treat their hair. Some of them have even begun organizing “Monistat Hair Growth Challenges” online. A local TV station in San Antonio also reported on the trend recently.
Using a feminine product to grow your hair sounds crazy — but does it really work?
The short answer: possibly.
The active ingredient in these products is miconazole nitrate, an antifungal agent. So how does an antifungal chemical help your hair grow? Well miconazole’s chemical structure is similar to another antifungal agent called ketoconazole which has been shown to block dihydrotestosterone, the hair-killing hormone responsible for female- and male-pattern hair loss. In fact, several studies have evaluated ketoconazole as an “anti-androgen,” meaning it combats the kill-off of hair follicles. Since miconazole is similar in nature to ketoconazole, it makes sense to think that it could also be effective at stopping female-pattern hair loss.
It’s important to remember that vaginal creams haven’t been clinically evaluated as a hair loss treatment — and I don’t recommend trying this without a doctor’s consent. Here are a few things you should keep in mind:
What Causes Anal Itching
The exact cause of your anal itching may not be known. Moisture in your anal area, certain foods and drinks, and tight clothing are common causes. The following can also cause anal itching:
- Bowel and anal conditions: Hemorrhoids, Crohn disease, and colon cancer may lead to anal itching. A small amount of bowel movement may leak and irritate your anal area. You may also have a tear in your anus. You may have an abnormal tunnel between your anus and nearby skin.
- Infections: An infection may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. An anal or bowel infection may cause your bowel to swell and itch.
- Skin conditions: Anal itching may occur if you do not clean your anal area properly. Skin allergies can cause anal itching. An autoimmune skin disorder can make your body’s immune system attack its own cells.
- Medicines: Anal itching may be a side effect of some medicines used to treat gout, arthritis, or infections. Creams, ointments, or medicines used to treat other anal problems may also cause anal itching.
- Mental or emotional problems: Certain psychological conditions may increase your desire to scratch your anal area.
- Trauma: An object put inside your anus may cause skin tears and anal itching.

Whyovercleaning Can Lead To Feeling Dirtier
The problem is the chemicals in the wipes dry out your bottom. So your skin works to produce more oil. And it still feels dirty down there. Vigorous wiping causes irritation of the superficial layers of the skin, repeatedly causing itching and burning, says Dr. Zutshi.
So what are those extra skin flaps? Theyre normal for many of us as we age. Women whove had children often have hemorrhoids during pregnancy that resolve later. But the stretched skin loses its elasticity and those folds in the perianal area are what patients feel.
This is the point where you self-diagnose hemorrhoids, Dr. Zutshi says, and start using medicated wipes and creams adding more chemicals that continue to make the situation worse. Even the alcohol-free wipes contain chemicals. And so the cycle continues. Remember: The skin in that area is delicate, is never exposed to the sun and should be treated with gentleness.
Sowhats Causing My Itchy Bottom
What patients often suffer from is the result of, ironically, being too clean.
What happens is a vicious circle. Filled with good intentions, you try to keep your bottom scrupulously clean by vigorous wiping using flushable wipes, Dr. Zutshi says. But the unexpected result is that this leads to soreness and itching and the feeling that you have abnormal down there, which in your dictionary is hemorrhoids.

How Did I Get An Anal Yeast Infection
Theres normally some Candida living in your gastrointestinal tract and other places on your body that are warm, dark, and moist. When you have an imbalance between it and the bacteria keeping it in check, the Candida becomes overgrown. The result is a yeast infection.
An anal yeast infection isnt considered a sexually transmitted infection, but it can be transferred through:
- unprotected anal sex with an partner who has a yeast infection
- analingus with a partner who has a yeast infection
- use of sex toys that have yeast on them
- using a dental dam
You can reduce the risk of Candida overgrowth by limiting moisture and irritants around your anus. Some things that help include:
- wearing breathable cotton underwear
- washing thoroughly after swimming and watersports
- avoiding the use of perfumed hygiene products on anal area
You might be able to reduce your risk for any type of yeast infection, including anal yeast infection, if you:
- take a daily probiotic supplement
- cut down on high carbohydrate foods and refined sugar
- get enough sleep to help give the body time to repair itself and boost the immune system
Youre at a higher risk for Candida overgrowth if:
Does Vagisil Kill Vaginal Bacteria
Vagisil mostly contains topical gels to numb the itching. As it has no antibacterial or antifungal activity, it does not protect against infection. If there is itching along with significant white discharge and smell, it is better to seek medical consultation. However, Vagisil is known to give significant relief from vaginal dryness and itching, especially in elderly women.
The other products available under the brand Vagisil are
- Intimate area wash, which is claimed to be hypoallergenic.
- Intimate wipes, which can be used to clean the vaginal area after using public washrooms.
- Vagistat suppositories and creams containing an antifungal called miconazole to treat fungal infections of the vagina.
It is advised to use the three products mentioned above after consulting a gynecologist. Most doctors believe that vagina can clean itself by its own cleaning mechanisms. It does not need intimate washes or douches.

What Causes Vulvodynia To Flare Up
Its important to note vulvodynia is not a sexually transmitted disease. It can happen to all women regardless of age or how healthy they are. While it can be triggered by tight garments, sitting for too long, or insertion of objects into the vagina, there are other reasons the vulva may become irritated. Some other causes may be changes to hormonal levels, yeast infections, excess bacteria, allergic reactions, muscle spasms, or the bodys response to an injury.

Applying an ice pack, sitting on pillows, using sanitary pads with witch hazel, and soaking in a sitz bathwith water just deep enough to cover your tender areascan all help to ease pain.
If the pain is too bothersome, over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help , if you are breastfeeding, always ask your babys healthcare provider before taking any medications. Some doctors also recommend a numbing spray.
