What Treatments Have The Lowest Recurrence Rate
When someone comes into our office and we diagnose them with hemorrhoids, our first line treatment for minor or moderate cases is often at-home treatment. It includes topical medication, sitz baths, stool softeners, and a change to a higher fiber diet. While this is often very effective in stopping symptoms and giving hemorrhoids time to resolve, it does little to prevent future recurrences unless you stick to the diet and other recommended lifestyle changes.
More severe cases or those that do not improve during at-home treatment may require a non-operative treatment. Many of these can be done in our office. They include techniques such as painless injections called sclerotherapy, or rubber band ligation. In most cases, non-operative techniques cause less postoperative pain than invasive surgical procedures, but also have a higher recurrence rate. This is because sclerotherapy and banding are each more of symptomatic relief, rather than curative treatment. When they do recur, we may be able to treat them with diet and over-the-counter medications.
What To Expect After Hemorrhoid Surgery
Your provider will give you detailed aftercare instructions, including:
- how to clean the surgical site
- a medication schedule and
- pain management techniques .
We may prescribe you stronger pain medication to use for up to five days following your surgery. Youll be scheduled for a four-week follow-up visit with your provider when your surgical site has healed.
Severity Of Ruptured Hemorrhoids
If the hemorrhoid bursts, an emergency care must be sought. The serious complication thats caused by excess blood loss are dizziness, faintness or even hypotension/shock. However, per rectal bleeding can also be a particular sign of other disease conditions, such as colorectal and anal canal cancer. Procedure For Prolapse And Hemorrhoids
PPH is also called a stapled hemorrhoidectomy. The doctor will use a stapler-like device to reposition the hemorrhoids and cut off their blood supply. Without blood, they’ll eventually shrivel and die.
It can treat hemorrhoids that have and have not prolapsed, or slipped down out of the anus.
This procedure moves the hemorrhoid to where there are fewer nerve endings, so it hurts less than a traditional hemorrhoidectomy. You’ll also recover faster and have less bleeding and itching. And there are generally fewer complications.
When To Consider Hemorrhoid Removal Surgery
Your doctor may decide that you are a good candidate for hemorrhoid removal surgery if:

You have combined internal and external hemorrhoids.

You have grade 3 or 4 prolapsed internal hemorrhoids. Prolapse means that the hemorrhoids are dropping, or slipping out of the anus. Grade 3 prolapse occurs with a bowel movement, but you can manually push the hemorrhoid back through your anus. A grade 4 prolapse cannot be put back.

You have additional anorectal conditions that require surgery.

Youve had minimally invasive procedures or other treatments that have not corrected the problem.

You have significant amounts of bleeding from your hemorrhoids.

You have a strangulated internal hemorrhoid. This occurs when the anal sphincter traps the hemorrhoid and cuts off blood supply to the tissue.
- You have a hemorrhoid with that recur after less invasive treatments.

What If Hemorrhoids Are Found During A Colonoscopy
Many different aspects of a patientâs medical history are considered during diagnosis. For a relatively healthy and normal individual complaining of minor rectal bleeding, bumps on the anus or nearby, and general anal-rectal discomfort, doctors will almost always initially suspect hemorrhoids.

Perhaps you have already had a colonoscopy performed, and your doctor has informed you of the results. If hemorrhoids have been found internally during the colonoscopy, your doctor will advise you on different methods of treatment.
When Should You Visit A Doctor For Hemorrhoid Treatment

- Hard, tender lumps felt at the bottom
- Anal pain, especially while sitting
- Bleeding from the rectum observed as bright red blood in the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl after a bowel movement
- A bulging or swelling may be felt through the anus in case of a prolapsed hemorrhoid
- You have tried over the counter medications for more than a week, but there is no relief of symptoms

Types Of Hemorrhoid Surgery
Surgeries for hemorrhoids can be divided into simpler, outpatient, and less invasive procedures you can do without anesthesia and more complex, inpatient surgeries.

- Grade 1: no prolapse

Potential candidates for hemorrhoidectomy generally include patients who:

- Have grade 3, grade 4, or mixed internal and external hemorrhoids that cause symptoms
- Have symptomatic hemorrhoids along with an associated anorectal condition that warrants surgery

How Are Internal Hemorrhoids Treated
Even if you require medical treatment for your symptomatic internal hemorrhoids, there are often other treatments to try before resorting to surgery. The most common of these methods is known as rubber band ligation.
Most colon and rectal specialists perform this procedure in the office, and it only take a few minutes. The doctor places a tiny band at the base of the hemorrhoid, reducing blood flow.
