When To Go To Emergency Room For Hemorrhoids

Early Postoperative Complications Of Anorectal Surgery

SMILING IN THE HOSPITAL’S EMERGENCY ROOM

Since many anorectal procedures can be performed safely and effectively in an ambulatory setting or an overnight stay, some patients may develop complications sooner or later after hospital discharge. Common early postoperative complications that bring patients back to the hospital include acute urinary retention, bleeding, fecal impaction and anorectal sepsis.

The incidence of acute urinary retention following benign anorectal surgery ranges from 0.5% to 17% depending on the extent of surgery, anesthetic technique, analgesic method, amount of intravenous fluid given and patients underlying disease. Bladder catheterization is the standard treatment of acute postoperative urinary retention. Should the volume of urine is less than 600 mL in low-risk individuals, the patients may be sent home without voiding. But if the catheterized urine volume exceeds 600 mL especially in high-risk patients , a self-retaining Foley catheterization may be required before discharge.

Signs And Symptoms Of Hemorrhoids

Seeing blood in your toilet bowl after a bowel movement is no doubt alarming, but its one of the main symptoms of hemorrhoids. Other symptoms include:

  • Bright red blood on toilet paper or in your stool after a bowel movement
  • Itching in the anal area
  • Pain in the anal area, especially when sitting
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • One or more hard, painful lumps around the anus

If you experience any of these hemorrhoid symptoms, avoid excess straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus, which can make irritation and itching worse, and can even lead to bleeding. In addition, try to pat the area dry instead of wiping it.

Relief From Hemorrhoid Symptoms

In general, a hemorrhoid is not serious, but the pain can make it feel like it is. A medical professional can confirm a diagnosis of hemorrhoids and recommend the most effective treatment options.

To the right are hemorrhoid symptoms pictures. Below are some of the common symptoms you may experience if youre suffering from hemorrhoids:

  • Noticeable swelling around your anus
  • Discomfort and irritation around your anus
  • Blood during bowel movements
  • A painful lump in or around your anus

Bleeding is more likely with internal hemorrhoids, while pain is more likely with external swelling. Depending on the severity of your hemorrhoid problem, the medical professional you see may recommend several treatment options. You may only need a simple remedy, such as a topical medication, stool softener, antibiotics, or pain medication. In more serious cases, however, surgery may be needed.

When To Use The Emergency Room

ER vs. Urgent Care

Whenever an illness or injury occurs, you need to decide how serious it is and how soon to get medical care. This will help you choose whether it is best to:

  • Go to an urgent care clinic
  • Go to an emergency department right away

It pays to think about the right place to go. Treatment in an emergency department can cost 2 to 3 times more than the same care in your provider’s office. Think about this and the other issues listed below when deciding.

Different Types of Hemorrhoids

There are two types of hemorrhoids: external and internal. External hemorrhoids arise from the anal canal, while internal hemorrhoids arise from the rectum, immediately above the anal canal. According to Cuckoo Choudhary, MD, associate professor of gastroenterology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, one type is not worse than the other, but both can cause problems. “It all depends on the size and degree of the hemorrhoid,” Dr. Choudhary says. “Untreated internal hemorrhoids can cause bleeding. External hemorrhoids can cause thrombosis , which gives way to severe pain from hemorrhoidal strangulation.”

If you know you have hemorrhoids and you have acute and severe anal pain, it could be a sign of thrombosed hemorrhoids.

Know When to See Your Doctor

Though the annoyance of hemorrhoids can be reason enough to call your doctor, use this checklist to know when a visit is a must:

  • If you’re experiencing any type of rectal bleeding
  • If the hemorrhoids are causing you pain or discomfort
  • If the problems persist despite trying over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams or other remedies
  • If you’re passing stools that look maroon in color or tarry in color, a sign of bleeding

If you experience a large amount of rectal bleeding that is accompanied by dizziness or faintness, be sure to seek emergency medical care immediately.

When Is Constipation An Emergency And What To Do About It

A person is said to have Constipation when he or she does not have bowel movements for more than three days or finds it very hard to pass bowels. There are basically three types of constipation namely Normal Transit Constipation, Slow Transit Constipation, and Outlet Defecation Syndrome. Normal Transit and Slow Transit constipation come under the category of motility dysfunction whereas outlet defecation syndrome is a type of chronic constipation where a person finds it very hard to pass stools at least one day of the week for six months or more. Motility disorders are conditions which affect the muscles of the gastrointestinal system that make the passage of food through the intestines slow.

Mild constipation is quite common and everyone once in a while has it. Certain food habits or change in food can cause the person to have constipation. However, sometimes constipation can become very severe to an extent that daily life becomes a challenge for the individual. It is also accompanied by various other symptoms that make constipation a medical emergency including blood in the stools and severe and persistent abdominal pain.

Constipation usually becomes an emergency if it is caused by certain medical condition like appendicitis, intestinal bleeding, strangulated hernia and fecal impaction. In such cases, the person may have to be taken to the emergency room for treatment. The article below gives details of when constipation becomes an emergency and what can be done about it.

Types Of Hemorrhoids: Internal And External

Hemorrhoids And Lifting–A Pain In The Ass | Tiger Fitness

Hemorrhoids are either internal or external.

Internal Hemorrhoids These hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum and are not usually visible to the naked eye. Internal hemorrhoids generally don’t hurt, but they often bleed painlessly.

In some cases, internal hemorrhoids may protrude through the anus and can be seen, which is known as becoming prolapsed. When this happens, they will usually shrink back inside the rectum on their own or can be pushed back in.

External Hemorrhoids These hemorrhoids develop under the skin around the outside of the anus. These are the most uncomfortable hemorrhoids and can be itchy or painful, and may feel lumpy. When a blood clot forms within an external hemorrhoid, this is known as a thrombosed hemorrhoid, which can result in severe, ongoing pain. Sometimes clots dissolve on their own, but if they dont, your doctor can remove the clot, a procedure thats most effective if done within 72 hours of the clot forming.

It can be hard to tell when your best bet is to rush to the emergency room.

When you wake up in the middle of the night with an alarming symptommaybe it’s a high fever or splitting headacheit’s hard to know whether to rush to the emergency room or not. You don’t want to overact, but you definitely don’t want to underreact either. So how do you know when that stomach pain needs to be treated ASAP or if that numb feeling can wait until morning to deal with? Lifestyle Changes For Managing Hemorrhoids

You may help prevent hemorrhoids from forming or from worsening with some lifestyle changes. These changes include:

  • Do not while moving your bowels.
  • Limit the amount of time you spend on the toilet.
  • Increase fiber in your diet. Fiber helps give stool bulk so it can be moved through your intestines, and it also helps water remain in the stool so it does not become dry and difficult to pass.
  • Increase fluid intake. Drink six to eight glasses of water and other liquids to help keep your stool soft.
  • Exercise regularly. This will help regulate and stimulate your bowels.
  • Apply topical ointments. OTC creams and suppositories can help relieve pain and reduce swelling.

  • : This is an out-patient surgical procedure to remove hemorrhoids.
  • stapling: Used primarily for internal hemorrhoids, this procedure uses a stapling tool that removes tissue.
  • Sclerotherapy: This involves an injection of a chemical solution directly into the hemorrhoid to shrink it.
  • Infrared photocoagulation: Used only for internal hemorrhoids, this procedure directs an infrared light toward the hemorrhoid tissue to cause scars, which block blood flow to the hemorrhoids.

Prevention Of Rectal Bleeding

The best way to prevent rectal bleeding is to prevent its chief causes.

People at high risk for colorectal cancer should undergo regular screenings, primarily colonoscopy. Colorectal cancer screenings can detect precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screenings can also identify colorectal cancer early, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

Itching, pain, and bleeding in the anal area are common signs of hemorrhoids.

Thinkstock

Hemorrhoids occur when veins in the skin around the anus or in the lower rectum get swollen and inflamed. Its not exactly clear what causes people to get hemorrhoids, but there are some common, accepted risk factors and conditions that lead to their development.

Aging can decrease muscle tone in the area, weakening the tissue and causing hemorrhoids to bulge, while obesity and pregnancy can increase the risk for hemorrhoids due to increased pressure on tissue in the area.

Repeated straining to make a bowel movement, as well as constipation, are also associated with hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids are generally not dangerous or life-threatening, but they may be painful.

GET IMMEDIATE RELIEF TO PILES

When you have bleeding, discomfort, or pain in the anal region, it could be a sign of an inflamed hemorrhoid. Or, it could indicate that something else is wrong. This is especially true if you dont have a history of hemorrhoids. Thats why its always better to play it safe and see a doctor, as they can accurately diagnose the cause of your symptoms. Its much better to have an expert confirm that you dont have something more serious like cancer than to avoid a hemorrhoid treatment just because youre uncomfortable seeking care.

When Hemorrhoid Surgery May Be Necessary

Very few people fewer than 10 percent of all adults who see a doctor because of symptomatic hemorrhoids will require a surgical operation.

Surgery to remove hemorrhoids is called a hemorrhoidectomy.

Your doctor may recommend a hemorrhoidectomy if:

  • You have large external hemorrhoids
  • You have both internal and external hemorrhoids
  • An internal hemorrhoid has prolapsed

In a hemorrhoidectomy, the doctor makes a small incision to remove the hemorrhoid and surrounding tissue before closing the wound with stitches.

A hemorrhoidectomy is performed in an operating room and can be done under general anesthesia, in which you are unconscious and unable to feel pain.

It can also be done with a spinal anesthetic block while you are awake , or with a combination of relaxing and sedating drugs given intravenously and a local anesthetic injected around the anus.

Hemorrhoidectomy is associated with postoperative pain, but the procedure is successful for 95 percent of cases.

More recently, another option aimed at avoiding the postoperative pain of a hemorrhoidectomy has become available, called a stapled hemorrhoidopexy. A circular stapling device pulls the hemorrhoidal tissue upward and to its normal position, stapling it in place. The staples eventually fall out over time.

There are many options for the treatment of hemorrhoids. Its best to discuss the benefits and risks of each of these with your doctor in order to come up with the treatment plan that is best for your particular case.
