Dietary And Lifestyle Tips To Prevent Hemorrhoids

Apart from including plenty of fiber and fluids in your diet, here are some tips you can follow to avoid getting hemorrhoids or prevent them from recurring after treatment:

  • Avoid sitting in the toilet for too long because it stretches your rectum and anal muscles so the veins in these areas may swell
  • Regularly exercise to improve bowel function. It also prevents you from becoming overweight which is a cause of hemorrhoids
  • Detox every once in a while so that hydration and digestion in the body is in balance. You can do this by taking probiotics that encourage increase of healthy bacteria in your gut. These bacteria clean your digestive tract.

A big part of preventing the occurrence of hemorrhoids and reducing its symptoms lies in the dietary choices that you make. Therefore, avoid foods that cause flare-ups and go for those that will leave you hemorrhoids-free!

Why Do You Need A High Fiber Diet

While shopping in your typical grocery store, youll notice that some food labels call out the fiber quantity right on the front. There are even products that even have the word fiber in their brand name to market fiber content as a primary benefit.

High fiber content is a selling point for products because of the spectrum of health benefits it offers.

  • Weight management: Those who get enough fiber have been successful at losing weight and keeping it off.
  • Improved nutrition: Fiber helps the body gain beneficial nutrients.
  • Natural detox: Fiber cleanses the body of waste, excess, and unhealthy fats.
  • Heart health: Getting enough fiber can lower your chances of cardiovascular disease and cancers.
  • Gut health: Fiber promotes beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract.
  • Blood sugar maintenance: Fiber slows down the absorption of sugar to keep blood sugar levels balanced.
  • Cholesterol control: Fiber keeps bad cholesterol in check.
  • Optimal bowel movements: Combined with getting enough water, fiber intake optimizes stool transit time, so it is key in a diet for hemorrhoid sufferers.

Perhaps the most common reason people increase their fiber intake is for bowel movement improvement, and as they do so they reap a whole host of other health benefits .

Foods To Avoid During A Hemorrhoid Flare

Health & Wellness20/04/2020

While having a nutritional diet of balance and moderation is important at all times, the following is a list of foods to avoid AT ALL COSTS during a hemorrhoid flare-up. Failure to do so will lead to further inflammation, increased discomfort and a tougher road to recovery. Avoiding those types of food will make Hemocyl even more efficient.

Refined Grains Refined grains have been milled to soften the texture of the grain, removing the bran or germ which contain all of its nutrients and fiber. Without these nutrients, proper digestion and elimination will not take place and often, refined grains will sit in the stomach or intestines, contributing to pain and swelling at the hemorrhoid site.

Dairy Dairy including milk and cheese, promote constipation and make hemorrhoids worse. Dairy products do not cause constipation on their own but contribute to constipation discomfort during hemorrhoid outbreaks. Dairy also causes gas production, which can contribute to pain and cramping if already constipated. Some research proves heavy dairy consumption can leads to the accumulation of bulk called soaps, which contribute to constipation and harder stool. Soaps occur as fatty acids in the intestines bind to calcium deposits from the diary.

Nutrition can be overwhelming at first, especially if its been a while since youve needed to know how calories, sodium, fiber and more interact with your body and your gut. Whats a relief to know is that this kind of knowledge can be easily obtained, and that making healthy choices with your food habits doesnt have to be hard.

All you have to do is read the nutrition facts of the food youre buying from the grocery store and start to understand which kinds of foods are high in sodium, fat, and sugar, and thus bad for digestion and hemorrhoid flare ups in most cases. You want to look for foods that are a proportionally high source of fiber.

Avoid Processed Foods That Cause Constipation

The reason to avoid lots of processed foods is because generally, their nutrient density is low and their energy density is high. This means theyre high in calories per gram and low in fiber per gram. When you eat these high calorie foods that are low in nutrient density, it takes more calories to get full and tends to result in overeating.

So while highly processed foods add bulk to your digestive tract, they do so without aiding in digestion and other essential bodily functions. These fatty, salty foods can lead to obesity, which is a catalyst for hemorrhoid flare ups due to the added weight youre adding to the frame of your body and added pressure on your circulatory system.

So what exactly is processed food and what should you be looking out for?

Not all foods that are processed are necessarily bad for you. Pressing seeds to make oil is technically a process, and so is pasteurizing milk and making healthy cereals. But when a processed food is high in sodium for example, it can dehydrate your digestive system leading to hemorrhoid-causing constipation.

The key here is to read food labels and make sure that calorie and sodium content is low while fiber content is high. Many ingredients in the worst foods for you are there for purposes of shelf life and taste and not health. They use fat, sugar and sodium for flavoring so you need to be aware of how much fat is added so you dont overindulge in your optimal daily caloric intake.

Go When You Need To Go

This sounds like common-sense advice, but too many people ignore it. If you delay using the bathroom, your stool may become hard and dry in your bowel, which makes it harder to pass. If you strain to pass stool, your risk for developing hemorrhoids increases.

Speaking of straining, dont force a bowel movement when you dont need to go, either. Straining increases the pressure on your venous cushions, which leads to hemorrhoids. In particular, straining can turn internal hemorrhoids into external ones.

Get Plenty Of Exercise

According to Dr. Desi, exercise and hemorrhoids have a love-hate relationship. Exercise helps keep the colon more regular, he says. However, engaging in activities that increase abdominal pressure and/or straining can lead to the formation of hemorrhoids. Staying active reduces your time spent sitting and putting pressure on the veins in your lower rectum. If you have a history of problematic hemorrhoids, you might want to steer clear of lifting heavy weights or other strenuous activities and opt for more moderate exercise routines such as yoga, swimming, or walking to prevent hemorrhoids from flaring.

Hemorrhoids What Foods To Eat

Hemorrhoids What Not to Eat?

Your diet should include foods that make your stool softer so that you dont have to struggle in the toilet and trigger hemorrhoids flare-ups. This includes foods rich in fiber and fluids. Fiber exists in two types soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves to become a gel-like substance so it softens stools while insoluble fiber, often called roughage, doesnt dissolve but adds bulk to your stool so it facilitates movement. Fluids, on the other, hand, soften stool to make it easier to pass.

The foods that you should embrace to treat your hemorrhoids include:

Whole Grains

Whole grains have their endosperm, bran, and germ intact so they contain a lot of fiber. Their fiber is insoluble so it reduces the pain and discomfort of passing stool associated with hemorrhoids. Whole grains that you should include in your diet are barley, brown rice, corn, whole-wheat flour, whole-wheat bread, quinoa, oats, and whole rye.

Legumes

Legumes contain both types of fiber but especially the soluble one. Legumes include beans, peas, soybeans, lentils, chickpeas, and nuts. Eating these will soften and add bulk to your stool so it prevents and relieves hemorrhoids.

Root Vegetables

Cruciferous Vegetables

Squash

Artichokes

Artichokes have high fiber content even when you eat them in small amounts. It also has soluble fiber, inulin that promotes the increase of friendly bacteria in the gut.

Fruits

Fluids
