Avoid Processed Foods That Cause Constipation
The reason to avoid lots of processed foods is because generally, their nutrient density is low and their energy density is high. This means theyre high in calories per gram and low in fiber per gram. When you eat these high calorie foods that are low in nutrient density, it takes more calories to get full and tends to result in overeating.
So while highly processed foods add bulk to your digestive tract, they do so without aiding in digestion and other essential bodily functions. These fatty, salty foods can lead to obesity, which is a catalyst for hemorrhoid flare ups due to the added weight youre adding to the frame of your body and added pressure on your circulatory system.
So what exactly is processed food and what should you be looking out for?
Not all foods that are processed are necessarily bad for you. Pressing seeds to make oil is technically a process, and so is pasteurizing milk and making healthy cereals. According to Dr. Desi, exercise and hemorrhoids have a love-hate relationship. Exercise helps keep the colon more regular, he says. However, engaging in activities that increase abdominal pressure and/or straining can lead to the formation of hemorrhoids. Staying active reduces your time spent sitting and putting pressure on the veins in your lower rectum. If you have a history of problematic hemorrhoids, you might want to steer clear of lifting heavy weights or other strenuous activities and opt for more moderate exercise routines such as yoga, swimming, or walking to prevent hemorrhoids from flaring.

Fiber exists in two types soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves to become a gel-like substance so it softens stools while insoluble fiber, often called roughage, doesnt dissolve but adds bulk to your stool so it facilitates movement. Fluids, on the other, hand, soften stool to make it easier to pass.

Whole grains have their endosperm, bran, and germ intact so they contain a lot of fiber. Their fiber is insoluble so it reduces the pain and discomfort of passing stool associated with hemorrhoids. Whole grains that you should include in your diet are barley, brown rice, corn, whole-wheat flour, whole-wheat bread, quinoa, oats, and whole rye.
Legumes contain both types of fiber but especially the soluble one. Legumes include beans, peas, soybeans, lentils, chickpeas, and nuts. Eating these will soften and add bulk to your stool so it prevents and relieves hemorrhoids.
Artichokes have high fiber content even when you eat them in small amounts. It also has soluble fiber, inulin that promotes the increase of friendly bacteria in the gut.

While recovery from hemorrhoid surgery isn’t quick, you don’t need to follow a special diet for very long following your procedure. For the first few days, you need to minimize movement through the area so that your wound can heal, which means eating foods that won’t add bulk to your stool and create big bowel movements. This type of diet is called a low-residue diet.
This diet consists of foods that are low in fiber to help minimize waste and bowel movements. Examples of the low-residue foods to eat after hemorrhoid surgery include:
- Any milk products, but limit to 2 cups a day
- Strained vegetable juice, potatoes without the skin and soft-cooked vegetables
- 100 percent fruit juice, canned fruits, soft melons and bananas
- White bread, white rice, pasta and cornflakes
- Soft cooked meat, poultry and seafood
