What’s The Best Stool Softener For Hemorrhoids

How Long Does It Take To Poop After Taking A Stool Softener

10 Best Natural Treatments For Hemorrhoids – At Home Remedies | Cleveland Health Clinic

Osmotic laxatives, including magnesium citrate and magnesium hydroxide, may produce a bowel movement in 30 minutes to 6 hours. Others may not take effect for 24 to 48 hours. Stimulant laxatives, such as Dulcolax and Senna, may take 6 to 12 hours. Stool softeners, such as Docusate, may take 24 to 48 hours.

How To Poop With Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids can make it extremely difficult to produce a bowel movement. Wiping, struggling to pass stools, and sitting on the toilet all become painful. A stool softener can make the action of a bowel movement much more manageable, and there are a few other methods you can try when eliminating with painful hemorrhoids.

Use medicated wipes to clean yourself after a bowel movement. Regular toilet paper can make bleeding hemorrhoids worse, but with cooling wipes, you can keep the rectal area hygienic while also reducing inflammation.

Avoid irritating your hemorrhoids as much as possible, as this will help them heal faster. Hemorrhoids will go away without treatment, but if they are painful and making your bowel movements hurt, then try applying creams and ointments that have analgesic ingredients.

There is no easy way to have a bowel movement with painful hemorrhoid lumps surrounding your sensitive anal opening, but by using medications, ointments, and medicated wipes, you can at least make it more bearable.

For the time being, a stool softener used for about three days can aid in more natural bowel movements.

Hemorrhoids, in mild cases, typically resolve themselves within a few days, if you follow your doctor’s orders, and so by the time you have finished your stool softener medication, hopefully, your hemorrhoids will be gone.

Why Are Stool Softeners Used For Short Term Use

Why is this medication prescribed? Stool softeners are used on a short-term basis to relieve constipation by people who should avoid straining during bowel movements because of heart conditions, hemorrhoids, and other problems. They work by softening stools to make them easier to pass. How should this medicine be used?

What Role Does Hygiene Play

Stool that is left behind after wiping can aggravate enlarged hemorrhoids even more. So its important to carefully cleanse the anus after going to the toilet, for example by wetting toilet paper with water first, and drying the anus afterwards. This can help avoid wiping yourself too roughly and making the symptoms worse.

Exaggerated hygiene can make symptoms worse too, though. Many people use things like liquid soaps and alcohol-based or perfumed wipes. But these often contain substances that can irritate the skin and lead to allergic reactions.

Best Diet For Hemorrhoids

Ultimately, the goal in hemorrhoid relief is to prevent straining. There are many reasons as to why straining occurs, and sometimes this can involve poor toilet habits.

Spending a long time trying to pass stools or on the toilet, in general, can affect the blood supply to essential parts of your rectal area.

The result of this is hemorrhoids, and this is why it is necessary to find the cause of straining to manage hemorrhoids on a long-term basis.

For hemorrhoids, a stool softener makes it easier for you to pass stools because as the medication’s name suggests, the stools soften.

Stools that are more comfortable for you to pass eliminates straining, which as you now know, is the primary factor in hemorrhoid development.

Your doctor may suggest a certain over the counter brand he or she feels is appropriate to take to lessen your hemorrhoid symptoms. Chances are, for your hemorrhoids, you will not be on a stool softener for an extended period.

Using a stool softener for an extended amount of time can have adverse effects. You also dont want your body to rely on this medication and be unable to soften stools on its own.

The recommended amount of time for a stool softener averages about one to three days of regular use. You shouldnt take this medication for more than a week unless directed by your doctor.

Be Patient When Treating Hemorrhoids

Most hemorrhoids will not interfere with normal daily living and resolve on their own after a few days.

There are conservative, at-home treatments to help with your symptoms like sitz baths, myrtus communis essential oil and stool softeners.

If hemorrhoids persist, more aggressive treatment options are available including prescription medications, rubber band ligation and surgical removal.

Remember that hemorrhoids are not life-threatening. Patience and following appropriate preventative tips are the best ways to manage them.

How Stool Softeners Work

Stool softeners are made of compounds called surfactants that change the consistency of stools so that more moisture can be drawn in. When this happens, stools become softer, meaning you don’t have to strain to pass them.

Docusate sodium is the active ingredient used in OTC stool softeners. Unlike other types of laxatives, docusate sodium draws water to the stool rather than to the interior of the intestine.

Stool softeners don’t work immediately. It may take up to 72 hours before they induce a bowel movement.

Treatment Of Constipation In Older Adults

Epsom Salt Stool Softener

CHRISTINE HSIEH, M.D., Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Am Fam Physician. 2005 Dec 1 72:2277-2284.

Constipation is a common complaint in older adults. Although constipation is not a physiologic consequence of normal aging, decreased mobility and other comorbid medical conditions may contribute to its increased prevalence in older adults. Functional constipation is diagnosed when no secondary causes can be identified, such as a medical condition or a medicine with a side effect profile that includes constipation. Empiric treatment may be tried initially for patients with functional constipation. Management of chronic constipation includes keeping a stool diary to record the nature of the bowel movements, counseling on bowel training, increasing fluid and dietary fiber intake, and increasing physical activity. There are a variety of over-the-counter and prescription laxatives available for the treatment of constipation. Fiber and laxatives increase stool frequency and improve symptoms of constipation. If constipation is refractory to medical treatment, further diagnostic evaluation may be warranted to assess for colonic transit time and anorectal dysfunction. Alternative treatment methods such as biofeedback and surgery may be considered for these patients.

How Can You Prevent Constipation

To avoid constipation and straining during bowel movements, people are often advised to change their diet, drink plenty of fluids, and get enough exercise. High-fiber foods like fruits, cereals, vegetables and legumes are generally recommended to try to make stools softer.

Studies suggest that plant fibers such as psyllium husk can reduce the frequency of bleeding. Whether or not they relieve other symptoms too hasnt been well studied. People who use psyllium husk must make sure that they drink enough fluids. But fiber can also cause diarrhea, which in turn leads to hemorrhoids being irritated even more by frequent bowel movements.

Stool Softeners And Laxatives

Top 5 Best Stool Softener Reviews in 2021

First of all, lets sort out the difference between stool softeners and laxatives. A laxative is a substance that you use to help you have a bowel movement. A stool softener is a type of laxative, called an emollient laxative. So, all stool softeners are laxatives, but not all laxatives are stool softeners.

In fact, there are many types of laxatives. Because many different things can cause constipation, laxatives work in different ways to resolve your constipation. Some work on your stool, some work on your intestine, and others work on both your stool and intestine. All laxatives are used to relieve constipation. Some may be a better choice for you than others, though, especially depending on how long you need to use them and how harsh the ingredients can be on your body.

Treating Constipation During Pregnancy

Constipation is a common problem in late pregnancy because of the rising level of circulating progesterone, which slows gastrointestinal motility. A Cochrane review45 found two randomized trials for treating constipation in pregnancy. The findings suggest that fiber supplements increase the number of bowel movements and lead to softer stools. Although stimulant laxatives are more effective than bulk-forming laxatives, they also are more likely to cause diarrhea and abdominal pain.45 Therefore, women who are pregnant should be encouraged to add more fiber to their diet if constipation persists, a stimulant laxative may be recommended.

Hemorrhoid Medication: When Why And Which Ones To Use

A number of OTC creams, ointments, and pads that contain hydrocortisone or witch hazel are available to help relieve pain, swelling, and itching caused by hemorrhoids. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, doctors recommend using over-the-counter products for a week. If symptoms persist beyond a week, follow up with your doctor.

Creams and suppositories containing hydrocortisone can cause the skin to weaken and thin, so they should not be used for more than a week. If any of these creams cause a rash or dry skin around the area, contact your healthcare provider.

A fiber supplement, such as Metamucil , or a stool softener, such as Citrucel , can help prevent constipation.

Avoid laxatives, which can lead to diarrhea and worsen hemorrhoid symptoms.

A Closer Look At The Consequences Of Unresolved Constipation

Ayurvedic Treatment for Piles, Internal External ...

Indeed, if youre among the millions of Americans struggling with constipation, strive to resolve your issue as quickly as possible.

Along with hemorrhoids, several studies have shown a correlation between rectal prolapse and long-term constipation. Here is a quick overview of rectal prolapse. This condition causes part of the intestines to push out through the anus when an individual strains to poop. Additionally, rectal prolapse can damage the rectum by causing ulcerations and severe bleeding.

Although the probability of experiencing rectal prolapse as a result of constipation-induced straining is relatively low, it is still something worth pointing out. According to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, less than 3 in every 100,000 people will ever experience rectal prolapse as a result of their struggles with constipation.

How To Get Rid Of Hemorrhoids

While hemorrhoids often resolve on their own after a few days, many turn to treatment options for faster symptom relief.

Apply wrapped ice packs to the painful area, use alcohol-free baby wipes instead of dry toilet paper and sit on cushions rather than hard surfaces to reduce pain, inflammation and irritation.

More frequent hemorrhoid pain or more serious symptoms may require extra treatment.

What Causes Hemorrhoids

Symptomatic hemorrhoids develop with increases in pressure to the blood vessels in the anus or rectum.

Numerous factors can potentially cause more pressure including:

  • Low fiber diets: A lack of high-fiber foods can cause denser, drier stool that involves more straining during bowel movements.
  • Pregnancy: An enlarged uterus puts pressure on the rectum and anus, weakening the surrounding muscles due to hormonal changes.
  • Obesity: Excessive weight produces more pressure.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing: Blood may pool in the anal canal while in these stationary positions.
  • Aging
  • Family history of hemorrhoids
  • Colon cancer

Summary: Hemorrhoids are caused when more pressure is placed on the anus or rectum. Family history and aging are two uncontrollable risk factors, while low fiber diets and obesity are two controllable.
