Can You Put Straight Witch Hazel On Hemorrhoids
Yes, patients can make use of straight witch hazel by putting a little of it warmed up on a cotton pad or cotton ball and applying it to the affected area as needed. Make sure that the witch hazel youve purchased has not been diluted with alcohol as this can dry out the area and cause further irritation. Also, please consider using witch hazel wipes for hemorrhoids as those do not require a cotton pad or cotton ball to use, and are intentionally crafted to be a soothing solution in your repertoire of home remedies.
Straight Dope Message Board
Okay, I said it. Im prone to mild hemorrhoids.
Anyway, I have therefore had some experience in treating them . And couple of days ago I tried Witch Hazel hemorrhoidal wipes for the first time. And it stings like hll. I guess I can tell you I was bleeding a little. But it clearly has alcohol in it. I must not be the only person it stings and burns for.
As long as were on the subject anyway, I might as well tell you. I use Vicks medicated rub. And for mild cases at least, it works like a charm believe it or not. I imagine petroleum jelly might work too.
Also on the subject, about 20 years ago, I had really severe case. Yeah, blood was everywhere. My gastroenterologist gave me hydrocortisone suppositories. And that worked.
And of course you know, theres no point in using Preparation H. It just doesnt work. What more can I say?
My experience with witch hazel is that it is often combined with alcohol, in bottles and wipes. Tucks is one brand of wipe: Ingredients: Hamamelis virginiana water, aqua, glycerin, alcohol, etc. You can also purchase witch hazel that does not contain alcohol but it can be harder to find. Thayers makes both.
I have never found the witch hazel sans alcohol to sting, even on fresh wounds from the surgeon and rhoids.YBMV
Also note that the 30 gram tube of Anusol is not a single dose application. Dont ask me how I know this
Right on the package, flushable!
Read ALL the info on the package/jar!
I then bought Tucks type wipes elsewhere.

The use of witch hazel for hemorrhoids dates back to hundreds of years ago. Native Americans discovered the healing properties of witch hazel long before early European settlers stepped onto the rock.
They mainly used it to reduce inflammation and stop the bleeding.
Witch hazel is touted as one of the best natural astringent anti-inflammatory compounds.
It is a tree that explodes with loads of aromatic yellow flowers in winter. Its healing properties come from a chemical known as tannic acid.
Tannic acid, as an astringent, is believed to constrict the blood vessels and skin at the end of the rectum, which in turn will reduce the bleeding.
If you intend to use witch hazel to stop the itching and bleeding, then you have come to the right place.
If you have tried it all, and still suffer from the extreme pain, let me tell you that you can cure your hemorrhoids and enjoy a lasting relief, using only time-tested all natural remedies.
Let me guess you are itching, in pain, bleeding, and you are very embarrassed. I know how it feels, I have experienced it firsthand. I battled with this hemorrhoids myself for two long dreadful years.
To someone who has never experienced the constant pain, it is hard to describe how horrible the feeling is.
To wake up every day, and fight the fear of going to the bathroom, and never have the chance to really feel good. Honestly, it is something I would not wish on my worst enemy.
