Both hemorrhoid blood and colon cancer bleeding from the lower rectum is red rather than brown. Its often described as a bright red or fresh looking.
Its scary to see blood on the toilet paper after you wiped following a bowel movement, and even more alarming when you see blood mixed with your stools.
Typically, bleeding from hemorrhoids usually occurs in the setting of having constipation or frequent straining upon having a bowel movement, says Dr. Neil Sengupta, MD, a general gastroenterologist and assistant professor at the University of Chicago, and GI Research Foundation Scholars Award Recipient.
Bleeding typically is small volume, may be on the top of stools, or present only on the toilet paper after wiping, continues Dr. Sengupta.
Colon cancer may lead to more significant bleeding or blood intermixed amongst stools.
The actual appearance of the blood is the same, meaning, its the same shade of red, whether its from a bleeding hemorrhoid or a cancerous tumor in the lower colon.
Its not as though a certain shade or red means it must be colon cancer.
The shade changes depending on where in the colon the bleeding is originating.
The higher up in the colon, the darker the blood because its older, and it may even appear black when mixed with the stools.
But hemorrhoid blood is always a fresh looking or bright red. It may even be pink if a little is mixed in with a combination of residual fecal smear or urine on the tissue paper.
How To Treat Bleeding Hemorrhoids
Though its not a very pleasant topic to think about, the fact is that hemorrhoids are one of the most common gastrointestinal problems. The National Institutes of Health estimates that about 1 in 20 Americans will develop hemorrhoids at some point during their life. For most people, though, getting hemorrhoids is a temporary problem that isnt much of a cause for concern. Sometimes the problem is more severe and the hemorrhoids cause rectal bleeding in those cases, a more proactive treatment approach is usually necessary.
Hemorrhoids With Blood Clots

Hemorrhoids found in the lower rectum are known as internal hemorrhoids while those found outside the anus are external hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids form as a result of excess pressure being exerted on blood vessels in the rectum and anus so the smooth flow of blood is hindered. Therefore, blood pools and the blood vessels swell up. The pressure can be caused by straining during bowel movements or having excess body weight. My Hemorrhoids Have Bright Red Blood
Bleeding after a bowel movement is normal and you shouldnt panic. Hard stools are often the cause of the bright red blood left behind after a bowel movement.
You may see this bright red blood on your stool or on the toilet paper after wiping or dripping directly into the bowl of the toilet after a bowel movement.
Fortunately, internal hemorrhoids are painless. The nerves in the lower rectum dont sense pain like the other nerve endings in our body. Hemorrhoid bleeding is widespread with internal hemorrhoids.
Can A Hemorrhoid Pop
If you have hemorrhoids, you might be asking the question, Can hemorrhoids pop? While hemorrhoids can burst, they will not pop in the sense that you can pop a pimple. A hemorrhoid is very different than a pimple or a boil. Hemorrhoids are rectal veins that have become swollen or inflamed. They will only burst to secrete blood in the most severe of cases.

Avoid Constipation And Straining At The Toilet
Keep the stools soft, and don’t strain on the toilet. You can do this by:
- Eating plenty of fibre .
- Have lots to drink. Most sorts of drink will do but too much alcohol and caffeine should be avoided.
- Fibre supplements. If a high-fibre diet is not helping, you can take fibre supplements such as ispaghula, methylcellulose, bran or sterculia.
- Avoid painkillers that contain codeine, such as co-codamol, as they are a common cause of constipation. However, simple painkillers such as paracetamol may help.
- Toileting. Go to the toilet as soon as possible after feeling the need. Do not strain on the toilet.
- Regular exercise helps to reduce constipation.
These measures will often ease piles symptoms such as bleeding and discomfort. It may be all that you need to treat small and non-prolapsing piles . Small grade 1 piles often settle down over time.

Is Bright Red Blood In My Stool Worse Than Darker Blood
The longer the blood is in your digestive tract, the darker it will typically look. This is because there are digestive chemicals in your body that naturally break down everything that moves through your digestive tract. The blood gets darker the longer its in contact with these chemicals. If your bleeding is higher up in the digestive tract, it might appear darker in the toilet. If you see bright red blood, that can mean its lower in your digestive tract or is moving through your body very quickly. While there are many benign causes of bright red bleeding, there are fewer benign causes of darker blood for this reason, dark blood may be more concerning, and warrants workup by your healthcare provider.

Signs Of Internal Hemorrhoids
Internal hemorrhoids are the most common type of hemorrhoid. These swellings develop inside the anal canal.
Small hemorrhoids stay inside the anal canal and cannot be seen or felt by the person affected by them. Larger hemorrhoids may fall outside the anus in a process called prolapse, often during a bowel movement or while the buttocks are being wiped. Hemorrhoids which prolapse may go back inside the anal canal on their own or may be pushed back in by the affected person.
Internal hemorrhoids generally cause no pain. Noticeable signs and symptoms of internal hemorrhoids include:
- Bright red blood in feces, on toilet paper after wiping, or in the toilet bowl
- Bodily tissue falling outside the anus, i.e., prolapse
- Mucal or fecal discharge
- A feeling of not having fully evacuated the bowels
Additional signs of a prolapsed internal hemorrhoid include:
- Itching around the anus, i.e.,pruritus ani
- A lump felt outside the anus
An internal hemorrhoid cannot be seen unless it prolapses. A prolapsed internal hemorrhoid has the following characteristics:
- Approximately the size of a grape
- A rubbery texture
- Skin colored or of reddish appearance
- Can usually be pushed inside the anus
- There may be more than one
If an internal hemorrhoid cannot be pushed back into the anus, it may become trapped by the sphincter muscle. This is called a strangulated hemorrhoid and can cause severe pain.

Wrap ice in a towel or cloth and press it on the hemorrhoids. This will help with reducing inflammation and pain. It does this by shrinking your blood vessels. Ice also helps to reduce the occurrence of blood clots and tissue damage. Apply ice to your hemorrhoids for 15 minutes at a time. Putting ice directly on the hemorrhoids will cause skin damage so avoid that.
Warm Baths
Warm water is soothing to hemorrhoids and it relieves pain and inflammation. It also improves the circulation of blood so the problem of blood pooling in your veins is solved. Soak in warm bathwater for 15 to 20 minutes daily until you feel better. You can also fit a sitz bath over your toilet seat and sit in it for the same amount of time.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is a shrub that is well-known for its ability to soothe inflammation and skin irritations. Its usually found in liquid form that can be applied directly on the hemorrhoids. Witch hazel is also used as an ingredient in anti-itch creams, soaps, and wipes.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel which is extracted from the leaves of the aloe vera plant, has anti-inflammatory effects. It will reduce the pain and inflammation of hemorrhoids. Make sure you do a skin patch test to make sure it doesnt cause an allergic reaction.
