Anal surgery can be very extensive, but often is necessary to establish a diagnosis of anal cancer or to ensure that anal cancer is not present. Sometimes the only way to obtain an adequate specimen is in the operating room. Our goal is to try to treat patients early, when they don’t have large volumes of disease, so they can be treated in the office. This is a much easier process. We usually advise patients that they we will need 2 to 3 weeks to recover from anal surgery before being able to return to work. This is a similar recovery period to a hemorrhoidectomy. Based on our experience we recommend the following as the best way to recover from anal surgery.

In addition to the above mentioned remedies, there are certain home remedies that may be used during this recovery period to ease the pain and quicken recovery.

• To begin with, it is very important to keep the surgery wound very clean. This will prevent possible infection to the wound.

First of all, hemorrhoid surgery is no longer always surgery.

Many people have heard tales of horror about someone they knew who had hemorrhoid surgery. In the past, the most prevalent treatment for hemorrhoids was hemorrhoidectomy, or the surgical removal of hemorrhoids. This procedure typically resulted in a painful, weeks-long recovery time. However, hemorrhoidectomies are now necessary only in the most severe cases. Technological developments have led to the discovery of effective nonsurgical treatments for hemorrhoids, such as laser infrared coagulation. These treatments provide lasting relief without the need for stitches or surgery and are usually performed right in the office in just minutes.

What Are The Treatment Options

Small hemorrhoids often clear up without treatment or with home treatment and lifestyle changes. If youve continued problems or complications, such as bleeding, you should see your doctor.

Who Removes Hemorrhoids?

Most hemorrhoid complaints begin with a trip to a family doctor. Your doctor will then refer you to a specialist: either a gastroenterologist or a proctologist . Proctologists specialize in surgical treatments, while gastroenterologists are experts in digestive diseases.

How Is Hemorrhoid Banding Performed

Before the procedure:

• You may have to stop taking blood thinners such as Coumadin and Aggrenox four to five days before the procedure.
• You may be asked to sign an informed consent form, which consists of the risk and benefits, alternatives, expectations, and length of the procedure.
• You may be given an enema on the previous night of the procedure.
• You may have to fast from a night before to the procedure.

During the procedure:

• Hemorrhoid banding can be performed either in a hospital or an office setting. Anesthesia may not be necessary while performing this procedure in an office setting.
• An endoscope is used to hold the hemorrhoidal tissue, and elastic bands are placed 5 mm above the line that separates the dentate line to prevent clots.
• Other techniques involve a vacuum suction band ligator and an endoscopic suction ligator in which the bands are deployed by suction.

After the procedure:

• Post-procedure pain is likely for 24-48 hours. Taking Tylenol can ease the pain.
• Bleeding may be observed for 7-10 days post the procedure.
• Avoid strenuous work for 24-48 hours after the procedure.
• Do not lift anything heavy for 24-48 hours.
• Avoid straining while defecating because it can lead to more hemorrhoids.

Using Warm Water And Cold Packs

One of the best ways to reduce pain and discomfort after a hemorrhoidectomy is by taking a warm sitz bath. Proctologists in Los Angeles usually recommend you take these shallow, warm baths several times a day during the first week after your surgery. Soaking in warm water will help you to relax and reduce swelling, both of which can help reduce your post-surgical pain.

Its important, though, to use plain water only. You should not be soaking in soap, Epsom salt, or other additives if not recommended by your doctor. Our doctors also recommend the occasional use of an ice pack applied to the anus. This can also help to reduce swelling and pain, although care must be taken not to apply the pack directly to the sensitive skin around the anus.

Hemorrhoid Medication: When Why And Which Ones To Use

A number of OTC creams, ointments, and pads that contain hydrocortisone or witch hazel are available to help relieve pain, swelling, and itching caused by hemorrhoids. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, doctors recommend using over-the-counter products for a week. If symptoms persist beyond a week, follow up with your doctor.

Creams and suppositories containing hydrocortisone can cause the skin to weaken and thin, so they should not be used for more than a week. If any of these creams cause a rash or dry skin around the area, contact your healthcare provider.

A fiber supplement, such as Metamucil , or a stool softener, such as Citrucel , can help prevent constipation.

Avoid laxatives, which can lead to diarrhea and worsen hemorrhoid symptoms.

Change Your Diet To Prevent Constipation

Your doctor will likely stress the importance of eating well and drinking plenty of fluids in the days and weeks following surgery. We recommend all hemorrhoidectomy patients add more fresh fruits and vegetables to their diet on a permanent basis.

A high-fiber diet, eight to ten glasses of non-carbonated liquids, and avoiding caffeine will help prevent constipation and make bowel movements easier. The last thing you want to do in the first few days after a traditional hemorrhoidectomy is strain and push during a bowel movement. This could lead to delayed healing and other unwanted side effects. Remaining on a high fiber diet and staying hydrated also helps prevent hemorrhoids from recurring in the future.
