Though hemorrhoid symptoms vary depending on the location and type, if you have external hemorrhoids, a thrombosed hemorrhoid , or a prolapsed internal hemorrhoid , simple things like sitting at your desk at work can cause extreme discomfort. For immediate pain relief, we recommend oral pain relievers or topical treatments such as an over-the-counter hemorrhoid cream or witch hazel. We may also prescribe a numbing cream to ease your pain.

Why Does The Itching Get Worse At Night

There are many reasons why the itching worsens at night. Our bodys natural rhythms are known to influence even the skins functions like fluid retention, blood circulation and temperature. At night, the blood flow and temperature increase make your skin warmer. This may make you want to scratch.

In winter, the skin is drier, so itching can worsen. This also happens because the skin loses moisture at night, making it parched.

At night, the bodys production of corticosteroids that reduce inflammation also slows down. It releases more cytokines at night, which increases inflammation. A combination of these two factors can make night itching worse.

Your mind plays a role too. During the day, even if you have itching on the body, you are busy with other things that distract you. At night, your activity is restricted to sleeping. With fewer distractions, the itching sensation gets stronger.

Sometimes, your bed linen can also cause an allergy, or wearing clothes made of synthetic fabric like nylon or polyester can cause itching all over the body.

How To Stop Hemorrhoid Itching

Hemorrhoids can be a very painful condition, but to make matters worse they also tend to cause severe itching.

For some people, this is their biggest problem with hemorrhoids. They may even find themselves scratching in their sleep, which may wake them up several times every night.

Stopping hemorrhoid itching

If you want to stop this itching, you first need to understand why its happening.

Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure inside of the veins. When these veins become engorged with blood, they expand and stretch out from your rectum towards your skin.

This causes the veins to bulge outwards and press against your skin, which is what creates hemorrhoid itching.

The good news is that this entire process can be stopped with proper treatment!

Its important for you to realize that if you dont fix the root cause of your hemorrhoids then youll never be able to stop hemorrhoid itching.

Hemorrhoids can actually be caused by a number of different things, such as genetics, aging, diet and lifestyle choices, and high blood pressure.

Whyovercleaning Can Lead To Feeling Dirtier

The problem is the chemicals in the wipes dry out your bottom. So your skin works to produce more oil. And it still feels dirty down there. Vigorous wiping causes irritation of the superficial layers of the skin, repeatedly causing itching and burning, says Dr. Zutshi.

So what are those extra skin flaps? Theyre normal for many of us as we age. Women whove had children often have hemorrhoids during pregnancy that resolve later. But the stretched skin loses its elasticity and those folds in the perianal area are what patients feel.

This is the point where you self-diagnose hemorrhoids, Dr. Zutshi says, and start using medicated wipes and creams adding more chemicals that continue to make the situation worse. Even the alcohol-free wipes contain chemicals. And so the cycle continues. Remember: The skin in that area is delicate, is never exposed to the sun and should be treated with gentleness.

Why Do Hemorrhoids Itch

What Are Hemorrhoids and How Are They Treated? [Dr. Claudia]

Hemorrhoid itching is caused by the scratch of acidic fecal residue coming in contact with an enlarged hemorrhoid during bowel movements. Acidity irritates the swollen skin, causing itching. Acidic feces residue can come directly from the diet or from overactive bowel habits and is most likely a combination of the two. In addition, there could be other factors.

Overactive bowel habits, or an IBD , can cause food to move too fast through the GI system. That creates an acidic bowel movement because bile added to the stool earlier on in the digestive process to break down foods remains active long after it shouldnt. This causes diarrhea to be acidic and irritates enlarged hemorrhoids.

Acidity can also come from food sources. Tomatoes, caffeine, spices, chocolate, and some juices like orange and apple juice are high in it. These foods can directly irritate enlarged hemorrhoids as they make their way to the end of the digestive tract, especially if they get there fast due to an overactive GI tract.

Weve written about good diets for chronic hemorrhoid sufferers in the past on this blog: Hemorrhoids High Fiber Diet

Between these two mechanisms, either in isolation or in combination, extra acidity can build up in fecal residue and make hemorrhoids itch.

Furthermore, it should also be noted that it is important to not scratch or dry out the area where your hemorrhoids itch, as this can make excessive itching worse.
