This is why its important to mention your hemorrhoids to your health care provider. Even when a hemorrhoid is healed completely, a colonoscopy may be done to rule out other causes of rectal bleeding. Treating And Preventing Hemorrhoids
Dr. Hsu says the best first step is to visit a drugstore to get some creams or suppositories that soothe inflamed rectal veins and speed healing. Look for treatments containing cortisone or lidocaine, which are especially helpful.
Stool softeners also help reduce straining and constipation, but be sure to avoid laxatives. Laxatives can cause diarrhea and further irritate swollen veins, which you definitely dont want, Dr. Hsu says. If your hemorrhoids are especially itchy or you feel a burning sensation, use baby wipes instead of toilet paper and apply witch hazel to the area with a cotton swab.
For more aggressive hemorrhoids, use a sitz bath to relieve itching, irritation and pain. Fill a bathtub with a few inches of warm water and sit in the tub, with knees bent, for 15 to 20 minutes. If getting in a bathtub isnt an option, purchase a plastic sitz bath kit, available at any drugstore, that fits over the toilet. For optimal relief, use a sitz bath several times per day.

Hemorrhoids In Patients With Cirrhosis Or Portal Hypertension
A clinician must differentiate bleeding hemorrhoids form bleeding anorectal varices because the latter can be managed by suture ligation along the course of varices, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, or pharmacological treatment of portal hypertension. Since a majority of bleeding hemorrhoids in such patients is not life threatening, conservative measure with the correction of any coagulopathy is a preferential initial approach. Of note, rubber band ligation is generally contraindicated in patients with advanced cirrhosis due to the risk of profound secondary bleeding following the procedure. Injection sclerotherapy is an effective and safe procedure for treating bleeding hemorrhoids in this situation. In a refractory case, suture ligation at the bleeder is advised. Hemorrhoidectomy is indicated when bleeding hemorrhoids are refractory to other approaches.

Rubber Banding Or Surgery
In rubber band therapy, doctors cut off the blood supply to bleeding hemorrhoids. After the blood supply is cut off, the hemorrhoid should wither away, fall off, and be expelled during a bowel movement. While this procedure has a high success rate, it can be very painful because of the squeezing. More advanced cases of hemorrhoids may require surgery. However, a hemorrhoidectomy is typically a last resort after all other options have been tried. As expected, surgery is a risky procedure, only considered in cases of a severely bleeding hemorrhoid.

Do not strain or push during a bowel movement. If a bowel movement has not occurred after two minutes on the toilet, get up and try again later. You may want to try employing a squatting motion rather than a standard sit when using the bathroom by placing a stool under your feet. This can help to clear the rectum easier. Hemorrhoidal cushions are part of the bodys natural anatomy in the anal canal. They help keep stool in and control continence. The problem with hemorrhoids develops when veins in those cushions become swollen and bulge. Hemorrhoids can occur inside the rectum. Those are called internal hemorrhoids. Or, they can happen under the skin around the anus. Those are called external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids dont cause any pain and usually dont require treatment unless they start to bleed. External hemorrhoids are the ones that typically lead to the pain and discomfort people often associate with hemorrhoids.
