Constipation is one of the leading symptoms of hemorrhoids. Laxatives help you deal with constipation because they help you achieve a more regular bowel movement, and prevent your hemorrhoids from worsening.

Unfortunately, laxatives are also habit-forming, and may create a dependency which can end up worsening your constipation instead of curing it.

A Word of Caution on Laxative Use

Therefore, you should only use laxative as a last resort, and only if youve already tried to make some lifestyle changes to relieve the constipation. Lifestyle changes such as loading up on fiber-rich food and drinking plenty of liquids usually clear up the problem. If these measures have failed, then thats the time you can look at laxatives as your next recourse.

There are many types of laxatives, which is why you need to choose the right kind. Here are the most common laxatives used in the treatment of hemorrhoids:

Bulk-Forming laxatives

Bulk-forming laxatives absorb water into the stool. They form a softer and bulkier stool, which is easier to eliminate. They can either be natural or synthetic .

Emollient laxatives

Also known as stool softeners, these laxatives work by increasing the moisture content of the stool in order to make it softer.

Stool softeners do not directly stimulate bowel movement, but they are used to prevent straining in the toilet, which is why they are highly recommended for hemorrhoids patients.

Introduction

Constipation can be extremely uncomfortable, and it can affect anyone due to many different causes. Whats the difference between a stool softener and a laxative? Let us help you sort some of this out.

Our Stool Softener Buying Guide

The Mayo Clinic describes constipation as having three or fewer bowel movements or difficult to pass stools in a week. While chronic constipation should be treated by a doctor, occasional constipation can be handled at home with an over-the-counter stool softener. There are several different stool softeners on the market, so youll want to take a look at this guide in order to choose the one that will work best for you.

Start off examining the ingredients used within the stool softener. You want to make sure it doesnt go against your diet. For example, the MiraLAX Stimulant-Free Laxative Powder Stool Softener is free of preservatives, sugars and gluten. That makes it a good choice for individuals who have a gluten-intolerance or a disease like diabetes.

Determine the method of delivery that works best for you. Many stool softeners come in a softgel or pill that can be swallowed in an instant however, some individuals have trouble swallowing pills. In that case, youll want to go with a liquid or a powder that can be dissolved in a glass of water or hot tea.

Check the age range of the stool softener next. If you want to keep a bottle in your medicine cabinet that is able to treat the entire family, go with a softener like the Kirkland Signature Stool Softener, which is safe for children ages 2 and up. Some stool softeners are only listed as safe for adults.

Soft stool consistency is promoted by consuming approximately 25-30 grams of fibre/day. For healthy adults 25-30 grams of daily fibre intake includes:

  • 4-5 serves of cereals

The fibre we consume can be grouped into two types soluble and insoluble fibre.

Many foods contain both insoluble and soluble fibres and most healthy adults derive health benefits from consuming both types of fibre in their diet.

Proper Use Of Laxatives

It is important for individuals to follow the instructions given by a healthcare provider and those supplied by the product manufacturer when taking an over-the-counter laxative. Unless otherwise directed by a medical professional, remember that over-the-counter and prescription laxatives are only intended for short-term use and you should not exceed the dosage on the label.

With all types of laxatives, it is important to consume at least 6-8 cups of liquids every day plus an additional glass with every laxative dose taken, unless otherwise advised by your healthcare provider. As described above, laxatives often draw fluid into the digestive system to soften the stool and/or pass it out with the bowel movement. Ensure plenty of fluid intake to prevent dehydration.

Laxative abuse can lead to serious dysfunction of bowel motility such as intestinal paralysis, cathartic colon, lazy or laxative gut, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, and other problems. Using laxatives regularly, except for bulk-forming agents and stool softeners, can lead to these problems. Therefore, it is important to use laxatives in moderation and under the supervision of a physician or other regulated healthcare provider. If you have chronic constipation, where it is a daily issue or occurs more than once a week, then seek the care of a medical professional before self-treating with over-the-counter laxatives.

Treatment Of Constipation In Older Adults

Best Stool Softener For Seniors of 2021 (Top 10) ~~ Aced Reviews

CHRISTINE HSIEH, M.D., Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Am Fam Physician. 2005 Dec 1 72:2277-2284.

Constipation is a common complaint in older adults. Although constipation is not a physiologic consequence of normal aging, decreased mobility and other comorbid medical conditions may contribute to its increased prevalence in older adults. Functional constipation is diagnosed when no secondary causes can be identified, such as a medical condition or a medicine with a side effect profile that includes constipation. Empiric treatment may be tried initially for patients with functional constipation. Management of chronic constipation includes keeping a stool diary to record the nature of the bowel movements, counseling on bowel training, increasing fluid and dietary fiber intake, and increasing physical activity. There are a variety of over-the-counter and prescription laxatives available for the treatment of constipation. Fiber and laxatives increase stool frequency and improve symptoms of constipation. If constipation is refractory to medical treatment, further diagnostic evaluation may be warranted to assess for colonic transit time and anorectal dysfunction. Alternative treatment methods such as biofeedback and surgery may be considered for these patients.
