How Do You Treat Them
The grade of the haemorrhoid, along with symptom severity, plays a role in medical decision making. Dietary and lifestyle changes should be introduced for all patients and can be helpful in managing symptoms for patients with grade one haemorrhoids.
A number of drugs, suppositories, creams and wipes are available too. Analgesic topical creams would be a reasonable option to manage pain associated with haemorrhoids. But there is a lack of strong evidence to support a benefit for topical treatment in symptomatic haemorrhoids.
Flavonoids, a large class of plant pigments, have been shown to improve symptoms of bleeding, discharge and itch. They are taken in tablet form.
In cases where symptoms persist and for those with grade two haemorrhoids, a gatroenterologist or surgeon can use rubber band ligation, which seems to be the most effective therapy. This is where a rubber band is applied to the base of a haemorrhoid via a proctoscope or colonoscope. The band cuts off the blood supply to the haemorrhoid causing it to slough off in around one to two weeks.
If this fails, or for grade three to four haemorrhoids, the most effective therapy appears to be surgical excision or haemorrhoidectomy. There are variations in surgical techniques and it would be worth consulting a colorectal surgeon for advice on the best approach for a particular patient.
Some Causes Of The Occurrence Of Hemorrhoids:
As you now know about the symptoms, you will be eager to know the reasons why this throbbing problem occurs. Below the reasons are given in brief:
Discomfort Itching And Irritation In The Anal Region
Theres really no reason to try and live with your hemorrhoids until the pain becomes severe enough to disrupt your life. Many effective nonsurgical treatments exist that can resolve your hemorrhoids, including:
The highly effective IRC method utilizes infrared light delivered via a small probe to painlessly coagulate the blood vessels supplying your hemorrhoid. As the blood flow is blocked, the enlarged hemorrhoidal tissue shrinks and your symptoms resolve.
Rubber band ligation
This method also blocks blood flow to the hemorrhoidal tissue, which eventually causes the hemorrhoid to wither and die. Its admittedly more painful overall than IRC and may cause bleeding, but it remains an effective, nonsurgical solution for treating hemorrhoids.

- taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin
- sitting in a tub of warm water, called a sitz bath, several times a day to help relieve pain

Most prolapsed internal hemorrhoids go away without at-home treatment. However, severely prolapsed or bleeding internal hemorrhoids may need medical treatment.
Medical Procedures For Hemorrhoids That Wont Go Away
If hemorrhoids don’t go away with home treatments, medical procedures may be necessary.
If you visit your doctor with painful external hemorrhoids those located around the outside of the anus that are visible from the outside your doctor may offer to excise them during the office visit. You will be given a shot with a local anesthetic to numb the area before the procedure.
Doctor’s office procedures for internal hemorrhoids those located inside the rectum may include:
Rubber Band Ligation This is the most commonly performed hemorrhoid procedure in the United States. In this procedure, which can be used for grades 1, 2, and 3 internal hemorrhoids , the doctor places a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, which can be done when your doctor performs an anoscopy examination to better visualize the hemorrhoids. The rubber band cuts off the hemorrhoid’s blood supply.
The procedure typically causes the hemorrhoid to shrink and fall off within about a week, though several short visits to your doctor may be necessary to completely get rid of the hemorrhoid. Minor bleeding and a feeling of pressure may occur, but this can usually be alleviated with OTC pain relievers. This procedure is not associated with significant recovery time.

What Is The Medical Treatment For Hemorrhoids
- Many creams, ointments, and suppositories are available for symptom relief and may be used for comfort. However, they do not “cure” hemorrhoids. Often they contain a numbing medication or a corticosteroid to decrease inflammation and swelling.
Prolapsed Internal Hemorrhoids Treatment
- Most prolapsed internal hemorrhoids can be pushed back into the anus, but occasionally your health-care professional may need to reduce them by gently pushing them with constant pressure.
- If the hemorrhoids remain swollen and trapped outside the anus and they are not treated, the hemorrhoid tissue may not receive enough blood and can become infected. In such situations, surgery may be required to resolve the problem.
Thrombosed Hemorrhoids Treatment
- Thrombosed external hemorrhoids can be painful and are associated with a hard lump that is felt at the anus and cannot be pushed back inside. Most often the clot within the hemorrhoid will need to be removed with a small incision.
- After local anesthetic is placed under the skin surrounding the hemorrhoid, a scalpel is used to cut into the area and the clot is removed. There is almost instant relief of the sharp pain but a dull ache may continue.
- There may be some mild bleeding from the hemorrhoid for a couple of days. Sitz baths and over-the-counter pain medications may be recommended.
- The use of a rubber or air rubber donut may help with the pain, and preventing constipation is a priority.

How Do You Know You Have Them
We classify problematic internal haemorrhoids as fitting into four grades. Grade one haemorrhoids have no prolapse and are usually painless. Bleeding may be the only symptom.
Grade two are more uncomfortable and do prolapse. But this resolves on its own. Grade three are more severe, with a prolapse that will not resolve on its own but can be manually pushed back inside.
Grade four haemorrhoids have prolapsed and cannot be pushed back manually. They are usually the most painful type.
Haemorrhoids can often be confused with anal skin tags, which are benign growths of excess skin around the anal canal.
The only way to know for sure if you have haemorrhoids is to have a rectal examination by your doctor, which involves inspection of the anus at rest and during straining. An instrument that visually inspects the rectum such as a proctoscope or a colonoscope can confirm internal haemorrhoids.

Causes And Risk Factors Of External Hemorrhoids
External hemorrhoids result from the blood vessels of your anus being put under so much pressure that they swell with blood because their flow has been hindered. This can be caused by various factors such as:
Constipation is a condition where you struggle to pass stool because its hardened. Passing stool less than three times a week is what is referred to as chronic constipation. Struggling to pass stool too often greatly strains the blood vessels in your anus and can make them swell with blood.
Sitting on the Toilet for Too Long
You may spend a lot of time sitting on the toilet because of constipation or it may be because you bring a book or your smartphone that make you lose track of time. This stretches your anal muscles and the veins bulge as a result. This also happens when you spend most of your day sitting at your office desk or couch.
When you frequently pass stool, the blood vessels of the anus are strained and they may become inflamed. Some factors put certain groups of people at a higher risk of suffering from hemorrhoids than others. These include:
Being Overweight or Obese
Having a healthy weight means that your body is able to support all your organs with no trouble whatsoever. When your body mass index exceeds 25, the excess body weight weighs down on blood vessels in the lower part of the body including the rectum and anus. Therefore, hemorrhoids are common in obese or overweight people.
