People come see me for a number of reasons, but one of the more frequent issues they mention is the problem of an itchy bottom . It is an embarrassing issue to discuss with anyone, and I completely understand why people are hesitant to mention it at all.
I want to give you some simple tips to help with the itching down below. As always, make sure you talk to your health-care provider before implementing any of these recommendations.
Why are you itchy down there?
There are a few reasons why people itch in the rectum:
You are TOO clean
The issue with anal pruritus is not that you are dirty or that you need to clean yourself more. It is being TOO clean. The anal area likes an acidic environment. When it becomes too basic, especially with excessive cleanliness, washing, or wiping with soaps or baby wipes, it causes irritation to occur which leads to itching.
A common mistake is to use chemical irritants during the shower to directly clean the rectum.
Dont do that!
That can dry your bottom more, making itching worse. It is better to allow the soap or shampoo to ease its way down your back into the rectum and not directly use it in that area.

Storage And The Importance Of Expiration Dates

In addition, if a tube or tub of paste has been opened, it should be thrown out after a year or at the expiration date, whichever comes soonest. If you use expired Desitin, or a tub or tube thats been opened over a year, the oils could be rancid and the active ingredients could have broken down due to exposure to light and oxygen, so its not really a good idea to then use it as a hemorrhoids treatment.

How To Use Zinc Oxide Suppository
Follow all directions on the product package. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Before use, clean the area with mild soap and water, rinse well, and pat dry. Use this product in the rectum only.
This product is generally used up to 6 times a day, or after each bowel movement, or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not use more often or for a longer time than directed.
To use suppositories, unwrap the suppository. Lie on your left side with the right knee bent. Carefully push the suppository just inside the anus with your finger. Do not push more than an inch or two inside the anus.
If the suppository is too soft to insert, place it in cold water or refrigerate it for 30 minutes before removing the wrapper.
Do not use this medication if hemorrhoids are bleeding or the rectal area is raw and irritated.
If symptoms do not improve within 7 days, if bleeding/worsening pain occurs, or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, tell your doctor promptly.
Desitin Vs Preparation H Active Ingredient Comparison
Desitins main active ingredient is Zinc Oxide 40%. Zinc Oxide forms a protective sheet or barrier over the skin that helps to heal and protect against rashes, wounds, redness, and irritation. Zinc Oxide has shown to be a very effective ingredient for rashes, skin irritations, and itching.
Preparation H has 4 active ingredients to Desitins 1 active ingredients. These 4 active ingredients are Glycerin 14.4%, Phenylephrine HCl 0.25%, Pramoxine HCl 1%, and White petrolatum 15%.
Glycerin and White Petrolatum are skin protectants. Like Zinc Oxide, they provide a barrier that protects the skin from outside contaminants and from further irritation. While Zinc Oxide is a better skin protectant, the other two active ingredients in the Preparation H cream push it over the edge in comparison to Desitin.
The Pramoxine HCL found in Prep H is a topical pain-numbing anesthetic. So, you will get immediate pain relief. The Zinc Oxide does provide pain relief but in more of a soothing way. It does not have a numbing effect like the Pramoxine HCL.
The Pramoxine HCL will actually block the nerves from telling your body that you are in pain.
