What To Put On Bleeding Hemorrhoids

If Discomfort From Hemorrhoids Isnt Resolved Within A Week

How To Alleviate Hemorrhoids | How To Alleviate Piles

When youve had persistent discomfort, pain, or itching for a week, its time to talk to a doctor. While some symptoms of hemorrhoids resolve on their own, others do not and can be treated by a doctor, so you dont have to live with the daily symptoms. Your doctor can recommend treatments that range from the conservative, like dietary and behavioral changes, or in-office procedures, such as rubber band ligation, to more invasive approaches like surgery.

Medical Procedures For Hemorrhoids

If your symptoms are severe or aren’t getting better after a couple of weeks, your doctor may suggest a procedure to shrink or remove the hemorrhoids. Many can be performed in their office.

Injection. Your doctor can inject an internal hemorrhoid with a solution to create a scar and close off the hemorrhoid. The shot hurts only a little.

Rubber band ligation. This procedure is often done on prolapsed hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids that can be seen or felt outside. Using a special tool, the doctor puts a tiny rubber band around the hemorrhoid, which shuts off its blood supply almost instantly. Within a week, the hemorrhoid will dry up, shrink, and fall off.

Coagulation or cauterization. With an electric probe, a laser beam, or an infrared light, your doctor will make a tiny burn to remove tissue and painlessly seal the end of the hemorrhoid, causing it to close off and shrink. This works best for prolapsed hemorrhoids.

Surgery. For large internal hemorrhoids or extremely uncomfortable external hemorrhoids, your doctor may recommend surgery.

  • Hemorrhoidectomy. The most effective technique is to completely remove the hemorrhoids. But recovery is painful and can take several weeks.
  • Hemorrhoid stapling. This technique cuts blood flow to internal hemorrhoids and moves prolapsed tissue back in place. Recovery is easier, but thereâs a greater chance of the hemorrhoids coming back.

What Are The Risks Of Taking Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is relatively safe.

Side effects. Stomach upset may result from taking witch hazel by mouth. When you apply it to skin, it may, rarely, cause inflammation . But even children tend to tolerate it well on the skin.

Risks. If you use witch hazel in appropriate amounts, your risks are relatively minor. But if you take high doses by mouth, it may cause kidney or liver damage.

Although witch hazel contains a known cancer-causing ingredient, theres likely no need for concern unless you regularly use high concentrations. The amounts are very small.

Because studies are limited, avoid using witch hazel if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Interactions. There arent any known interactions with drugs, foods, or other herbs and supplements.

Dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the same way that food and drugs are. The FDA does not review these supplements for safety or efficacy before they hit the market.

Be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements youre taking, even if theyre natural. That way, your doctor can check on any potential side effects or interactions with medications, foods, or other herbs and supplements. They can let you know if the supplement might raise your risks.

Why Do Hemorrhoids Bleed

Even though internal, external, and thrombosed hemorrhoids are all slightly different, one of the commonalities between them is possible bleeding as a symptom. Bleeding can occur for a variety of reasons, but the main reason is due to straining during a bowel movement when swollen, inflamed hemorrhoids are subjected to excessive straining, the surface of the hemorrhoid can become damaged and start to bleed. This can also happen when a person is constipated and has dry, hard stools. Because of pressure from pooling blood, thrombosed hemorrhoids can actually burst and cause significant bleeding as well.

Risk Factors For Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoid Relief

Several risk factors have been claimed to be the etiologies of hemorrhoid development including aging, obesity, abdominal obesity, depressive mood and pregnancy. Meanwhile, some conditions related to increased intraabdominal pressure, such as constipation and prolonged straining, are widely believed to cause hemorrhoids as a result of compromised venous drainage of hemorrhoid plexus. Some types of food and lifestyle, including low fiber diet, spicy foods and alcohol intake, was reported to link with the development of hemorrhoids and the aggravation of acute hemorrhoid symptoms.

Blood From Thrombosed Hemorrhoids

A hemorrhoid, particularly an external one, can develop a blood clot inside. The collection of blood may suddenly turn the spot blue or purple. A thrombosis can be terribly painful.

Although it doesnt always happen, it is possible for a thrombosed hemorrhoid to burst. The buildup inside may become too great, and the blood may come rushing out.

This sudden burst of blood can be quite surprising and a bit of a mess.

No, due to the lack of pain-sensing nerves in the lowest part of the rectum, fortunately, bleeding hemorrhoids do not hurt.

Do I Need To See A Doctor

Its best to see a doctor if youre noticing blood. While it could be due to a hemorrhoid, it could also be a sign of something more serious, such as colorectal cancer.

A doctor will likely start by confirming that hemorrhoids are the source of the blood youve noticed. To do this, theyll either examine the area for external hemorrhoids or insert a gloved finger to check for internal hemorrhoids.

If its still not clear where the bloods coming from, they may recommend a colonoscopy, which involves inserting a small, lighted camera into your colon while you are sedated. This will help them check for any signs of other conditions that could be causing the bleeding.

Make sure to tell them if you have any of the following symptoms in addition to bleeding:

  • changes in stool consistency or color
  • changes in bowel movement habits

Treatment Options Available for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are a pretty common condition. They fall into two categories: internal and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are often not associated with symptoms. They usually resolve on their own and cause little to no pain unless they become prolapsed or thrombosed. External hemorrhoids are the hemorrhoids that are most commonly associated with pain, bleeding, itchiness, burning, and discomfort.

The most common causes of hemorrhoids are:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing

While most hemorrhoids can be treated at home, some cases require additional medical treatment if they become severe or symptoms are too much to handle. The best way to treat hemorrhoids is to prevent them from occurring. Simple lifestyle changes can help speed the healing process and prevent future recurrence of hemorrhoids. Lifestyle changes include:

If lifestyle changes do not help, you may want to look to other medical treatments for hemorrhoids.

When To See Your Healthcare Provider

While rectal bleeding is a common symptom of hemorrhoids, it can also be a symptom of other conditions, including ones that are more serious. Do not assume rectal bleeding or pain is due to hemorrhoids without confirmation from a healthcare provider.

Contact a healthcare provider if you have rectal bleeding and:

  • It is the first time you are experiencing rectal bleeding.
  • There is a change in bowel habits, weight loss, and/or abdominal pain.
  • Your symptoms get worse.
  • There is more blood than usual.
  • Your symptoms aren’t responding to home treatment within a week.
  • You have concerns.

Diagnosis Of Rectal Bleeding

Do not assume the rectal bleeding is from hemorrhoids. A physical exam, rectal exam, sigmoidoscopy, and in some cases colonoscopy is mandatory to identify the cause of the bleeding and help rule out other conditions such as colon or rectal cancer. Associated change in bowel habits, weight loss, and abdominal pain mandate additional testing. New onset rectal bleeding in someone over the age of 40 that is not typical of hemorrhoids or does not respond to banding requires further testing with colonoscopy. Selected patients under the age of 40 may also need colonoscopy as colon cancer does occasionally occur in younger individuals. Sexually transmitted diseases of the rectum such as HPV, syphilis, gonorrhea, or herpes may also cause rectal bleeding.

Stop Piles From Bleeding With Home Remedies

How To Stop Bleeding Hemorrhoids? How To Stop Bleeding Internal Hemorrhoids Home Remedy?

Home remedies might be the quickest and cheapest way to stop piles from bleeding, though the relief will probably only be temporary. There are a number of home remedies including apple cider vinegar, sitz baths, epsom salts, that are available over the counter for the immediate relief of bleeding piles, so finding the right one for you may take some trial and error. There are different remedies for each of the types of hemorrhoids, so for the most effective approach, make sure the remedy is recommended for your particular issue. Try applying sesame oil directly to the external piles for quick relief from bleeding. If your bleeding piles are internal, you can try drinking hot milk and lemon juice three times per day, or you can eat a yam and rice with tamarind leaves, or sugar candy coated in coriander juice. Each of these three home remedies is supposed to stop internal bleeding piles. You might also try the ever-popular sitz baths if the above do not work for you. Again, I dont know if we should have the sesame oil and foo-foo dust stuff in a blog that we publish. Fiber, fluids, sitz baths, limiting time on the commode are safe things to recommend.
