Staying active reduces your time spent sitting and putting pressure on the veins in your lower rectum. If you have a history of problematic hemorrhoids, you might want to steer clear of lifting heavy weights or other strenuous activities and opt for more moderate exercise routines such as yoga, swimming, or walking to prevent hemorrhoids from flaring.

    Avoid Processed Foods That Cause Constipation

    The reason to avoid lots of processed foods is because generally, their nutrient density is low and their energy density is high. This means theyre high in calories per gram and low in fiber per gram. When you eat these high calorie foods that are low in nutrient density, it takes more calories to get full and tends to result in overeating.

    So while highly processed foods add bulk to your digestive tract, they do so without aiding in digestion and other essential bodily functions. These fatty, salty foods can lead to obesity, which is a catalyst for hemorrhoid flare ups due to the added weight youre adding to the frame of your body and added pressure on your circulatory system.

    So what exactly is processed food and what should you be looking out for?

    Not all foods that are processed are necessarily bad for you. Pressing seeds to make oil is technically a process, and so is pasteurizing milk and making healthy cereals. But when a processed food is high in sodium for example, it can dehydrate your digestive system leading to hemorrhoid-causing constipation.

    The key here is to read food labels and make sure that calorie and sodium content is low while fiber content is high. Many ingredients in the worst foods for you are there for purposes of shelf life and taste and not health. They use fat, sugar and sodium for flavoring so you need to be aware of how much fat is added so you dont overindulge in your optimal daily caloric intake.

    Maintain A Healthy Gut

    Your gut health has a lot to do with how your digestive system functions. Good and bad bacteria live inside your gut and it’s important to maintain a balance between the two.;

    Probiotics can help enhance your gut health and promote healthy bacteria. You’ll find these in foods like kombucha, kimchi, and miso. ;A plant-based diet is also good for detoxifying your body.;

    Foods to avoid with hemorrhoids include fried food or those high in saturated fat. Spicy food can also upset your stomach and cause irritation when going to the bathroom. Avoiding spicy foods will also help reduce acid reflux.;

    Caffeine and alcohol are other culprits that can disrupt your gut function. Too much sodium can dehydrate you and increase bloating. ;

    Additional Tips To Help Treat And Prevent Piles

    Several at-home remedies and lifestyle habits may help treat hemorrhoids or reduce the risk of developing them, such as:

    • using over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams or suppositories for around 1 week before talking to a healthcare professional
    • using OTC laxatives or stool softeners
    • avoiding lifting heavy objects when possible and lifting with the knees
    • trying to avoid straining during bowel movements, holding in bowel movements, or sitting on the toilet too long
    • staying hydrated by drinking water, fruit juices, clear soups, or other liquids that may help fiber from foods work better
    • using OTC pain medications

    Foods That Cause Hemorrhoids Are Mostly Processed Foods

    When it comes to constipation, a high fat diet with low amounts of dietary fiber and insufficient water intake are generally the biggest culprits in causing piles.;The intestines need dietary fiber in order to work properly. In a sense, dietary fiber gives the intestines something to grab onto and move easily. In addition, dietary fiber absorbs water, which keeps stools bulky and soft for easy passing.;A high fat diet with low water intake, on the other hand, allows the body to move the food through very slowly and suck every bit of water out of it.;Naturally, this leads to constipation. So, foods that are high in fat and low in dietary fiber are among the main foods that cause hemorrhoids.

    Overprocessed packaged food is one of the major groups of foods that cause hemorrhoids.;Most people dont know exactly how much fat and empty calories are in packaged food because its hidden. Of course, the information is there on the nutrition label, but how many people really take the time to look at that? For that matter, how many people really know how to read one? You have to have some basis for comparison before a nutrition label makes any sense, and it takes time to look up how much fat, fiber, and nutrients homemade food has because when you make it at home it doesnt come with a label. However, you can pretty much take it to the bank that any food you make at home will have less sugar and fat and more fiber than any of these packaged foods that cause hemorrhoids.

    Colitis Or Crohn’s Disease

    Colitis and Crohn’s disease are two common forms of inflammatory bowel disease. Both can cause inflammation and may lead to ulcers in the digestive tract.

    Ulcers, or open sores in the lining of the stomach or small intestine, are often caused by a bacterial infection. They can also develop from long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , like Ibuprofen. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease can cause bloody diarrhea, as well as stools that contain mucus or pus.

    What to do: Visit a primary care physician or gastroenterologist to find out the best treatment plan for you. This may include limiting inflammatory foods, or whatever triggers your flare-ups. Research also suggests boswellia may help manage inflammatory bowel disease. One small study, published in the Annals of Gastroenterology, compared the effects of boswellia and a prescription medication used to treat Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome on patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. They found boswellia to be equally as effective, without some of the dangerous side effects of the medication.

    Hemorrhoid pain is made worse by irregular, firm stools and the straining required to pass them. For relief from painful hemorrhoids without the need for medical intervention, strive to get 28 grams of fiber every day .

    Fiber is a nutrient thats essential for digestive health. Its an element of many plant-based foods that the human body cant break down, so it keeps your digestive tract clean and bowel movements soft.

    When hemorrhoid discomfort starts affecting your quality of life, Elvira Klause, MD can help. She offers a range of nonsurgical hemorrhoid procedures, from sclerotherapy to rubber band ligation. These treatments cut blood supply to the enlarged vessels, allowing them to disappear.

    Main Causes Of Hemorrhoids

    Smooth bowel movements make for a happy colon. Bowel movements where youre straining, pushing a lot, and sitting for long periods can cause or make hemorrhoids worse. In fact, any activity where youre building pressure in the anal region will make the veins down there susceptible to swelling.

    But today were focused on promoting healthy bowel movements. To do that, you need to make sure youre eating the right diet for hemorrhoid sufferers and avoiding foods that cause constipation or frequent trips to the toilet.

    High sodium foods, for example, typically found in highly processed foods at restaurants and fast food joints contribute to an unhealthy diet and constipation. And while its possible to have these foods in moderation, eating them constantly is an issue because it introduces so much salt into your body that it starts to cause dehydration in your digestive system.

    There are other diet no-gos that we are going to discuss below but this point should be emphasized: while we have incredibly resilient bodies, we still need to treat it right to optimize our health and well-being.     The cluster of veins and blood vessels inside of your lower rectum become inflamed, and occasionally, a hard stool will scrape the surface of the lining in this area.;

    Colon cancer also produces rectal bleeding, and so consulting with your doctor if you experience this symptom is never a bad plan.

    Do I Need To See A Doctor

    Its best to see a doctor if youre noticing blood. While it could be due to a hemorrhoid, it could also be a sign of something more serious, such as colorectal cancer.

    A doctor will likely start by confirming that hemorrhoids are the source of the blood youve noticed. To do this, theyll either examine the area for external hemorrhoids or insert a gloved finger to check for internal hemorrhoids.

    If its still not clear where the bloods coming from, they may recommend a colonoscopy, which involves inserting a small, lighted camera into your colon while you are sedated. This will help them check for any signs of other conditions that could be causing the bleeding.

    Make sure to tell them if you have any of the following symptoms in addition to bleeding:

    • changes in stool consistency or color
    • changes in bowel movement habits
    • weight loss
