Hemorrhoid Remedies You Can Try On Your Own At Home

There are several steps you can take at home to ease the discomfort caused by hemorrhoids:

    • Take a sitz bath two to three times daily for 15 to 20 minutes. Sit in warm water, covering just your hips and buttocks. This can help reduce itching and irritation. You can take a sitz bath in a few inches of warm water in a regular tub, but small tubs that fit over toilet seats are also available for this purpose at pharmacies. Following a sitz bath, gently pat the area dry to avoid further irritation.
    • Use ice packs on the area to relieve swelling and pain.
    • Dont push too hard or strain while passing a bowel movement.
    • Keep the area clean by bathing or showering daily with warm water. After bathing, gently pat the area dry. You can even use a hair dryer to dry the area.
    • Sit on cushions rather than hard surfaces to help lessen the swelling of hemorrhoids and keep new ones from forming.
    • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin as needed.

    Hemorrhoid Cream Vs Hemorrhoid Suppository

How to Insert a Preparation H® Suppository for Hemorrhoid Relief

Many people wonder wether a hemorrhoid cream or suppository is better. Neither one is necessarily better overall, but will help more depending on the circumstance you are in.

If you have internal hemorrhoids, a suppository will be better for you. There are some hemorrhoid creams that are great and do have applicators.

If you have external hemorrhoids, a hemorrhoid cream will work better than a hemorrhoid suppository. Suppositories do work for external hemorrhoids but hemorrhoid cream is likely better.

You can use both at the same time for best results.

Avoid excessive handling of suppository which is designed to melt at body temperature. Insert one suppository rectally, pointed end first. Insert one suppository in the rectum twice daily, morning and night for two weeks, in nonspecific proctitis. In more severe cases, one suppository three times a day or two suppositories twice daily. What Makes A Hemorrhoid Suppository

Active ingredients included in hemorrhoid suppositories can be natural herbs such as witch hazel or synthetic agents like phenylephrine HCl. Some formulations may combine both types of remedies.

To ensure that hemorrhoid suppositories stay solid before use and melt slowly, the active ingredients are formulated in a base which is the substance also serving as a vehicle for the active ingredients. Cocoa butter is a popular choice for the base in hemorrhoid suppositories.

Hemorrhoids Suppositories are not meant for external hemorrhoids as these medications are developed in a way to work inside the body.

You can use topical creams and ointments for external hemorrhoids.

There are basically three different types of hemorrhoids suppositories available: Vasoconstrictors Analgesics and anesthetics and Laxatives.

Vasoconstrictors work by tightening the blood vessels and reducing the inflammation and pain.

Analgesics and anesthetics also reduce pain.

Laxatives dont work for hemorrhoids directly.

Instead, they ease the bowel movements and provide relief from constipation, which is the root cause of hemorrhoids.

    Causes Of Rectal Bleeding

Rectal Bleeding may be caused by hemorrhoids or something more serious. Find out what is causing your bleeding and get the right help.

The most common cause of rectal bleeding is from internal hemorrhoids. The blood is typically bright red and associated with bowel movements. It may be noticed on the tissue paper, on the surface of the stool, or drip into the bowel. The bleeding is typically mild and intermittent but occasionally is massive and causes anemia. Internal hemorrhoids are present in everyone. If they become dilated the blood vessels become friable and bleed. There may be associated rectal pain, swelling, itching, incomplete evacuation of stool, or leakage of stool.

Black Tarry stools are usually due to digested blood from the stomach or esophagus. There may be an ulcer, inflammation-gastritis, or varices-dilated blood vessels from cirrhosis of the liver. Black licorice, lead, iron, or Pepto Bismol can also cause black stools.

Red or maroon-colored stools, which may be foul smelling, is referred to as hematochezia or lower GI bleeding. Causes include diverticulosis, angiodysplasia, inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, cancer, colitis, radiation damage, or due to a connection between the colon and the aorta following aortic surgery and graft placement. This bleeding may be life threatening and requires immediate hospitalization.

    How Can You Prevent Constipation

To avoid constipation and straining during bowel movements, people are often advised to change their diet, drink plenty of fluids, and get enough exercise. High-fiber foods like fruits, cereals, vegetables and legumes are generally recommended to try to make stools softer.

Studies suggest that plant fibers such as psyllium husk can reduce the frequency of bleeding. Whether or not they relieve other symptoms too hasnt been well studied. People who use psyllium husk must make sure that they drink enough fluids. But fiber can also cause diarrhea, which in turn leads to hemorrhoids being irritated even more by frequent bowel movements.

    Topical Vs A Rectal Suppository

Experts recommend using pastes, ointments, and creams on external hemorrhoids. These topical treatments provide temporary pain relief. Moreover, prescription and over-the-counter treatments for hemorrhoids can ease mild pain, itching, and burning. If you or a loved one have internal hemorrhoids, it is best to use a rectal suppository. As mentioned, the body absorbs the medicine via the rectal tissue.

In most cases, suppositories help ease pain and discomfort associated with internal hemorrhoids. Sometimes, they can also soothe signs and symptoms of external hemorrhoids. You can use a suppository two to four times daily for a maximum of seven days. According to the experts, it is best to insert a rectal suppository after a bowel movement. This way, the effect lasts longer.

    Herbal And Home Remedies

    Garlic Coconut Suppositories for Hemmoroids

In addition to OTC and prescription medicated suppositories, you can make and use alternative suppositories. These are designed to provide comfort and relief, but they dont have active ingredients to reduce swelling, irritation, and pain.

Coconut oil suppositories can be used with hemorrhoids. These are formed by freezing coconut oil in small cylinders. When youre ready to insert the suppository, you can remove one and quickly insert it into the rectum.

The cooled oil provides instant relief. Coconut oil may also provide prolonged relief due to potential anti-inflammatory properties.

You can also make your own laxative suppositories. Combine mineral oil and a solid oil, such as coconut oil or cocoa butter. Freeze into cylinders, and remove one when youre ready to insert.

Mineral oil is absorbed by the body and can help ease stool through your intestines.

    Is Hydrocortisone Good For Hemorrhoids

Hydrocortisone is a strong anti-inflammatory that can greatly relieve symptoms. It not only reduces swelling, it can also relieve the symptoms of itching.

Since this can be one of the most bothersome symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is often used to treat hemorrhoids.

Because of its potency, however, prolonged use is not recommended. Extended use of the steroid can weaken the skin and cause other symptoms.

Thats why higher concentration is offered only through prescription medication.

Under the guidance of your medical provider, prescription strength hydrocortisone can greatly relieve your symptoms to treat hemorrhoids.

However, as a substitute, you and your doctor may consider a hydrocortisone topical cream that you can apply for long time without the risk of side effects.

Medical Procedures For Hemorrhoids That Wont Go Away

If hemorrhoids dont go away with home treatments, medical procedures may be necessary.

Doctors office procedures for internal hemorrhoids those located inside the rectum may include:

Rubber Band Ligation This is the most commonly performed hemorrhoid procedure in the United States. In this procedure, which can be used for grades 1, 2, and 3 internal hemorrhoids , the doctor places a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, which can be done when your doctor performs an anoscopy examination to better visualize the hemorrhoids. The rubber band cuts off the hemorrhoids blood supply.

The procedure typically causes the hemorrhoid to shrink and fall off within about a week, though several short visits to your doctor may be necessary to completely get rid of the hemorrhoid. Minor bleeding and a feeling of pressure may occur, but this can usually be alleviated with OTC pain relievers. This procedure is not associated with significant recovery time.

Sclerotherapy In this quick, often painless procedure, the doctor injects a chemical into the hemorrhoidal blood vessel, causing scar tissue to form in order to shrink the hemorrhoid. The principle behind this is the same as rubber band ligation, though its not always as effective. This procedure can be used in patients taking blood thinners, for whom rubber band ligation may not be recommended.

When Should You See The Doctor For Hemorrhoids

Before assuming that your condition is hemorrhoids, it’s a good idea to see your doctor for an examination. After all, it’s difficult to take a look for yourself. And please, no “selfies”!

If there is any bleeding, severe pain or fecal incontinence , you should definitely see your doctor. A large amount of bleeding or the sudden onset of severe pain means you should seek medical treatment immediately.

Is A Prescription Hemorrhoid Suppository Better

GoodSense® Hemorrhoidal Relief Suppositories, 24 ct

While there are prescription hemorrhoid suppositories, there is little to no evidence indicating they work much better for hemorrhoids.

Some products contain vasoconstrictors or steroids that may do a little better.

If you have an extreme case of hemorrhoids, you may want to consult your hemorrhoid doctor and see if a prescription suppository would be okay for you.
