Research And Statistics: Who Gets Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women, affecting about 1 in 20 Americans. The most common time to get hemorrhoids is between ages 45 and 65. Hemorrhoids are also common in pregnant women.

By age 50, about half of us have experienced hemorrhoid symptoms, such as itching, bleeding, and rectal pain. At any given time, about 10 million Americans roughly 4 percent of adults have hemorrhoids. Its estimated that 75 percent of Americans will have hemorrhoids at some point in their lives.

What Should I Eat With Hemorrhoids

Eating whole grains and other foods that are high in fiber can help ease symptoms of hemorrhoids, such as discomfort and swelling. These foods can also help prevent hemorrhoids from forming by making the stool bulky and softening it. This helps you avoid straining, which can lead to hemorrhoids. When you increase your fiber intake, you should do so gradually to lower your risk of having gas.

Do I Need To See A Doctor

Its best to see a doctor if youre noticing blood. While it could be due to a hemorrhoid, it could also be a sign of something more serious, such as colorectal cancer.

A doctor will likely start by confirming that hemorrhoids are the source of the blood youve noticed. To do this, theyll either examine the area for external hemorrhoids or insert a gloved finger to check for internal hemorrhoids.

If its still not clear where the bloods coming from, they may recommend a colonoscopy, which involves inserting a small, lighted camera into your colon while you are sedated. This will help them check for any signs of other conditions that could be causing the bleeding.

Make sure to tell them if you have any of the following symptoms in addition to bleeding:

  • changes in stool consistency or color
  • changes in bowel movement habits

Again, before assuming that your condition is hemorrhoids, it’s a good idea to see your doctor for an examination. After all, it’s difficult to take a look for yourself. If there is any bleeding, severe pain or fecal incontinence , you should definitely see the doctor. A large amount of bleeding or the sudden onset of severe pain means you should seek medical treatment immediately.

Can Hemorrhoids Be Prevented Or Avoided

Just about everyone has hemorrhoids at some time. But some things may make you more likely to get them. People whose parents had hemorrhoids may be more likely to get them. Pregnant women often get hemorrhoids because of the strain from carrying the baby and from giving birth. Being very overweight or standing or lifting too much can make hemorrhoids worse.

Whats The Best Way To Get Rid Of Hemorrhoids

There are a few remedies you can try to treat hemorrhoids at home, Dr. Bedford says. First, eating a high-fiber diet, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of liquids can help make your poop softer and move it along more easily, so it doesnt cause extra irritation to your hemorrhoids. Avoiding sitting for long periods of time can also minimize discomfort.

If youre still having trouble, there are over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams and ointments that can help, like Preparation H. These can help decrease inflammation and help shrivel up or shrink hemorrhoids, Dr. Bedford says. If that doesnt do the trick, your doctor may recommend a prescription cream or suppository to try to fix the situation.

Whom Do Hemorrhoids Affect

Although most people think hemorrhoids are abnormal, almost everyone has them. Hemorrhoids help control bowel movements. Hemorrhoids cause problems and can be considered abnormal or a disease only when the hemorrhoidal clumps of vessels enlarge.

Hemorrhoids occur in almost everyone, and an estimated 75% of people will experience enlarged hemorrhoids at some point. However only about 4% will go to a doctor because of hemorrhoid problems. Hemorrhoids that cause problems are found equally in men and women, and their prevalence peaks between 45 and 65 years of age.

What Is The Proper Way To Treat Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoid treatment: Should I REMOVE or LEAVE them?

Proper ways to treat hemorrhoids include:

More advanced hemorrhoids may need a doctor’s intervention in the office. In an external hemorrhoid thrombectomy, your doctor will remove the clot in the external hemorrhoid under local anesthesia.

Another in-office procedure includes rubber band ligation. A probe is used to grab the hemorrhoid, which the doctor then ties off with a rubber band. The hemorrhoid loses blood flow and shrivels up. The underlying mucosa heals, thus alleviating hemorrhoid pain.

If your hemorrhoids persist, there are several surgical options. If you think you have hemorrhoids, a visit to your medical professional may be warranted. They will help to determine which treatment option is best for you.

When Is It Time To Seek Medical Care For Hemorrhoids

Drinking more water, eating more fiber, and taking over-the-counter medications may help hemorrhoids to resolve on their own at home. However, often a doctor can help you get effective relief faster than you might on your own. And, in some cases, your symptoms could indicate a condition more serious than hemorrhoids. Thats why its always better to be safe than sorry and get your hemorrhoids evaluated sooner rather than later.

Hemorrhoids Are Common So Dont Be Shy About Seeking Relief

Most people dont want to talk about hemorrhoids. But keeping silent could stand in the way getting relief for a condition thats very common. And your doctor certainly doesnt mind addressing the topic of hemorrhoids. In fact, they want to discuss your symptoms. Because what you think is a hemorrhoid could be something more serious. Its best to get your hemorrhoids checked out early, for your peace of mind and to protect your health.Doctors have seen and heard everything, so you dont have to feel embarrassed when talking about hemorrhoids especially since nearly half of all adults experience them by age 50, says Dr. Christopher Buzas, a colorectal surgeon at Geisinger. However, its essential to get a medical diagnosis to rule out other conditions, like colon cancer or irritable bowel syndrome, and not rely on your own opinion about whats causing the problem.

With external hemorrhoids, you may have:

With internal hemorrhoids, you may have:

Internal hemorrhoids are usually not painful unless they are prolapsed. Prolapsed internal hemorrhoids may cause pain and discomfort.

When Is It Time To See Your Doctor

Uh oh...I think I have hemorrhoids?! (Im in my 3rd trimester) Im on ...

While most people think of hemorrhoids as a minor problem, they can be very painful, explains Dr. Buzas. Knowing when to treat conditions such as hemorrhoids on your own and when its better to seek help can help you avoid unnecessary complications. If youre experiencing any of the following situations related to your hemorrhoids, make an appointment to see your doctor:

  • You experience rectal bleeding or see bright red blood on your toilet paper.
  • Youve tried over-the-counter remedies for more than one week without relieving your symptoms.
  • You have bowel movements that are maroon or dark like tar in color, which can be a sign of bleeding.

If your rectal bleeding wont stop and you feel dizzy or faint, you should consider it a medical emergency that warrants a trip to the emergency room. When you see your doctor for hemorrhoids, youll first discuss your symptoms. Be sure to answer any questions directly and honestly, to get the best diagnosis. Your doctor will then examine you for external hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids and other potential issues.

Getting your hemorrhoids checked out is no different than and as important as getting a routine colonoscopy, Pap test, mammogram or prostate exam, Dr. Buzas notes. Theres no reason to be reluctant or delay your care.

He adds, Your doctor will make sure youre comfortable during the exam, after which youll quickly be on your way to experiencing relief from your hemorrhoid symptoms.

Related Conditions And Causes Of Hemorrhoids

Gastrointestinal problems such as constipation and diarrhea can lead to or worsen hemorrhoids. The prolonged sitting or straining that may occur when you’re dealing with these issues puts pressure on the hemorrhoidal tissue.

Hemorrhoids also often develop during pregnancy. This is similarly due to greater pressure in the area but can also be due to an increase in blood volume and as a result of hormonal changes that increase the likelihood of swelling. Constipation during pregnancy is a common cause of hemorrhoids.

  • Pushing during bowel movements

People who stand or sit for long stretches of time are at greater risk, too.

You may get them when you have constipation or diarrhea that doesn’t clear up. Coughing, sneezing, and vomiting could make them worse.

I don’t want to go into too much detail about my problem, but it happened overseas. Worked out what was going on after a few days. Only a little blood. It was mainly that something had popped out of my errr, back area. I used ice to bring down the swelling and wiped with aloe vera and witch hazel. Also fixed up my diet and a few other things. There was a blog that put me onto: Don’t Panic They’re Just Hemorrhoids. Pretty cheap if you want to check it out. Hope it helps.

How Do I Know If I Have Hemorrhoids

posted: Sep. 04, 2019.

About one out of every 20 people suffer from hemorrhoids , and like a lot of other medical issues, they become more common as we get older. In fact, the National Institutes of Health says about half of all men and women over age 50 have hemorrhoids, making them a really common medical complaint among older people. A lot of people think rectal bleeding is the hallmark sign of hemorrhoids, but actually, many hemorrhoids don’t cause bleeding. And sometimes, rectal bleeding can have other causes, like colorectal cancer. Because hemorrhoids are such a common medical complaint among both men and women, recognizing their symptoms can help ensure you get the right treatment at the right time.

What Do Hemorrhoids Feel Like

Do hemorrhoids itch? Do hemorrhoids hurt?

These are some of the first questions that people will ask when they are trying to determine the cause of their discomfort. By far, the biggest complaint regarding hemorrhoids is the itching. The feeling of blood pulsing through a swollen and twisted vein in such a sensitive region of your body is going to cause you to feel itchy.

The worst part about itching hemorrhoids is that you cant simply itch them, which typically causes the sensation to grow more severe. Sitting for a prolonged period of time will typically worsen the itching.

To alleviate itching caused by hemorrhoids you can try using cold compresses, take a warm sitz bath, or try using an over the counter ointment.

These solutions will help to reduce itching, as well as lessen the severity of other symptoms that commonly develop with hemorrhoids. Whether they are internal or external, all hemorrhoids produce the same symptoms at different levels of severity.

Common symptoms of hemorrhoids include:

  • Pain during bowel movements

Bleeding causing by hemorrhoids is not typically severe. Bleeding occurs typically during a bowel movement, when the process of pushing causes the bulbous vein to tear or scratch. When this happens, the blood will show clearly on the tissue in a streak of bright red.

Getting Restful Sleep Without Triggering Hemorrhoid Pain

Depending on your preferred sleeping position, your hemorrhoid pain can make it difficult for you to get a good nights rest. In addition to clean cotton underwear and loose-fitting pajamas, we recommend you sleep on your stomach to reduce and place a pillow under your hips to prevent yourself from rolling over onto your back.

A full-body sitz bath right before bed may also ease discomfort, help you feel more relaxed, and make it easier for you to fall asleep. In addition, reading or listening to soothing music may take your mind off your hemorrhoids and your discomfort, which may help you get to sleep faster.

Thats why its important to seek medical care for hemorrhoids, especially if your symptoms get worse. On top of treating your hemorrhoids, your doctor can help you reduce the chances of another hemorrhoid flare-up by discussing things like your diet, staying hydrated, and changing your bathroom habits.
